If things keep up as they are going, everybody in the State will soon be a member of an Ananias club, or an anarchist, or maybe both. The Greenwood Index favors the abolition of the county-to-county campaign, but thinks it would' be unwise to abolish it this year. It strikes us, 'If it is a good thing this year, it ought to have been a good thing two years ago, and ought, in all probability, to oe a good thing two years hence. In a cartoon in a Wilson paper the anti-Wilson Democrats are pictured as a snake lying beside the pathway of the voter, ready to strike. Suppose Wilson should be nominated by the Democratic party; do the Wilson people expect to win in the election without the aid and the votes of the honest Democrats who prefer some one else as the standard-bearer of the party, but who maintain that they are as much Democrats as the' Wilson contingent? Is it doing the party any good for a certain element in it to seek to read out of the party every one who 'does not agree with that element, even to the minutest details? We think not. Newberry, S. C., April 15, 1912. Mr. W. H. Wallace, Editor The Observer, Xewberry, S. C. T^V ^ ^ .. T _ , 1 _ uvar on . in vour euuuriai in uie j Observer of this afternoon, under the J caption, ''What Does This Mean," you | quote an article in The Herald anC j News of Friday stating that arrange- j ments have been made with Mr. W. H. Hunter to handle the advertising contracts for the booklet of the Newberry Chautauqua association, and that "Mr. Hunter has entire authority to contract for the advertisements and no one else has been authorized to solicit advertising for any publicatioi: authorized by the association," and your comment upon this article which appeared in The Herald and News is as fol-; lows: "Considering that there is only one other printing establishment in New berry, the above article has very much the appearance of having "been meant as a slur at the Observer. There is neither reason nor justice in the insinuation and we do not propose to stand for it. "The president of the Chautauqua association has stated to us, of his own motion, that the slur was not authorized by the association. j "Before saying more we give The j Herald and News the opportunity to 1 | j be explicit in its language and to say j ; just what it means by the last paragraph quoted above." You have evidently confused the Chautauqua association with The Herald and News. j At a meeting of the hoard of governors of the association, at which the 'editor of The Herald and News was present as a member, and at which the president of the association -.-as - " -L - A"U ~ ; present, it was aeciaea 10 issue me | booklet containing the official pro gram, and Mr. Hunter was authorized i to handle the advertising contracts. This publication, under this action, was to be the official publication of the association. Mr. Hunter stated that he was met with the question if there would be other publications, or if this would j be the only official publication. He i was informed by the editor of The TTorfliri nnri \>ws that as he under : stood the action of the board of gov| ernors, this was to be the only official : publication of the association, and Mr. Hunter then requested that this stateI Iment be made. There are two printing establish? ! ments in Newberry. So far as we j I ; know, the contract for the publication i ! of the booklet has not been awarded. :We know it has not been awarded to ;The Herald and News. The Observer | has as much right to bid upon-the publication or to be awarded the contract under a proper bid as bas The Herald | and News. Where the slur comes in the editor of The Herald and News is unable to say. If slur there be, it is as much a slur against The Herald and News as against the Observer, because The Herald and News is one of the two newspaper and publishing plants in Newberry. That is the whole matter, and these j are the whole facts, and the president jof tho association knew the wiiole f^cts before they were published in The Herald and News; he knew, or j ought to have known, that The Herald and News had no contract so far for the publication of the booklet. How Vi- fiv.rtlxr rlio^rimina+iricr min/J iridiipp?d him, "of his cwn motion," to state to the editor of the Observer that "the slur" Tvas not intended by the assoTo the Man Who Hrice ot A utomobn By building 75,000 FORD Model 1 COMPANY is able to produce that lowest price ever dreamed of in the n: production, combined with the simp] centration of all thought and enen upon the one model, made possible t The chance to buy that completely T Runabout for $590; the Model T I own Lar tor b90o, must appeal to for prices to come down." The Herald and News is not the Chautauqua association, and the booklet authorized by the association is no more The Herald and News booklet than it is the Observer booklet. The Herald and News thanks you : for tie opportunity to be explicit and i to say just what it means. The Herald and News means just what it said. Very truly yours, E. H.
