Entered xt the Postoffice at New erry, S. C., as 2nd class matter. E. H. AULL, EDITOR. Tuesday, November 21, 1911. The supreme court of North Carolina holds that it is against the law to lend a friend a bottle of whiskey, or even a drink. Nothing heard from Felder yet. Greenwood Journal. Is that so? We thought that you were hearing from him right often, but all that he was saying was that he was coming so.on. Mr. Carnegie has set apart another $25,000,000 to be given to libraries Wish you were a library?-Greenville News. We wouldn't mind very much if we didn't have to erect ourself into a Car r.egie monument. And speaking of Blease, does any body remember what ever became of Patterson, of Tennessee ?-Greenville News. It was ever thus. The man who rides in the chariot today may push the wheel-barrow tomorrow. "How did Blease ever get to be governor of South Carolina any way?" asks the Durham (N. C.) Sun: Through the vote of Charleston.-Greenville Piedmont. We thought he received a few votes in Ahderson and Pickens and Green ville and Laurens, and Spartanbiirg and a few other counties, but maybe we are mistaken. The Greenville Piedmont says that oil and water will not mix. Neither will whiskey and gasoline mix when it is tried you generally see an. s.utomobile lying agalnst the fence smashed to pieces the next morning.1 --Greenwood Journal. We do not know about whiskey and gasoline, but suppose you .ask John Floyd, of Spartanburg, about *oil andj: $20,OO( To be Sol New ( Look For These Figures. 1 THIS STOCK MIUST BE SOLD $4.50 to $5.00 SU1T S $3.90 BUY NOW AND SAVE MONEY R. In the bright lexicon of Greenville's vocabulary there is no such word as Chicco.-Greenville News. But don't a blind tiger by any oth er name smell just as much like booze ?-Spartanburg Herald. And they are not so awfully blind in Greenville, but the stuff they hai)d out is awful. One thing may be said to the credit of the Charleston tiger, you can get something worth while. and the Chicco gin fizz is 0. K.-New berry Herald and News. Coming from the Newberry Herald and News this recommendatioi should make the "Chicco Gin Fizz" the stan dard. And in gin fizz a wonderful property that stirs human sympathy and makes fitness for public office a matter of no consideration.-Sparta n burg Herald. We were talking about blind tigcrs and gin fizzes and no- about fitness for offlice. It is a m:t-r of fact. all the same, that Charleston is not the only p ace where the blind tiger ex istS, or where whisrey is illegally sold. THE TETERANS' HOME IN COLU BIA. A legislative committee, with the as sistance of veterans who performed ac tual service, should investigate the Confederate Veterans' home in COlum bia. Is there any real need of the institu tion? What is the average number of veterans in the home? Were they all in actual service on the firing line? Are there any men there who are not entitled to a place?. What is the cost per month to keep each veteran? Are they all disabled men who can not do manual labor? Do any of them have obs in the city and conduct a regular business and use the home as a free odging and boarding house? How any men and women are employed to are for the home and what pay do hey receive? These questions are not to be con trued as charges, but the veterans at1 ld Before hoods DaiIl Tags! J AND: home, V1o - h. 1P out of their Snili I earnings to support the home, want to know all about the management of affairs. Our delegation should consid er this matter and if they think it nec essary, the investigation ought to b made.-Spartanburg Journal. There is very little need to have an investigation by your delegation to find out What it costs to maintain the Confederate home. A reference to the appropriation bill as passed by the last legislature will show you that the appropriation for 1911 is $14,000. A report from the home wrould be neces sary, for you to know just how this money is expended. Under the act creating the home only two soldiers are received from each county. We suppose if some county did not have two more than two could be re(-eived priation for this year makes the main from some other county. The appro teiiance about $173 each per annum. The home cost to build about $15,000. As a member of the legislature we oppose.1 the approprication for fthe building of the home', and it was dI, largelv to the efforts of Capt. J. H. Brooks., then senator from Greenwood county, and the h-elp given by Gen. W. E. James, of Darlington, and a member of the house, that the bill went through. Now that it is built we do not want to see it torn down. It may cost a lit tle more to keep those who are there than is given to others, but if there are any Confederate soldiers who have no relatives to car for them, and no home of their own, it is as little as the State can do to furnish them a home in their old age, and to give them such comforts as that home may provide.
