* *' CLEMSON EXTESNION WORK. ** * Article 52. Reports from various sections of th4 State indicate that the ravages of the cotton caterpillar are decidedly general. The old cotton has suffered relatively little from its attacks, but it appears from reports in many in stances that the late cotton has sus tained rather considerable damage. In its feeding, the caterpillar eats pre ,,ferably the young leaves, buds, and squares of the cotton. The eggs are laid on the under side of the leaves of the cotton, usually on the larger and lower leaves. These hatch out into the striped caterpillars seen so abundantly, ana Decoming full grown, "web up," form-mg a chrysalis or cocoon from which emerges an olive to clay-yellow colored moth about one and one-hair inches from tip to tip of wings, with a leaden col ored !spot on each fore wing. The eggs which are overtaken by frost per ish and hence we find that the bulk of these forms pass the winter in the chrysalis or pupal stage. Fall plow ing of affected areas will be of great destructive damage to tMe wintering forms. The best remedial measure is the application of Paris green at the rate two to two and one-aalf pounds per acre applied in the dry form in the early morning, wheL the foliage is moist A one-inch board, about eight inches in width, about six inches wid er on each end than the width of the cotton row, and trimmed in the middle so as to make it easily handled before a man on a mule is the chief piece of apparatus needed. A one- or two-inch anger hole should be bored in either end so as to fit the rows, and under these should be tacked an eight ounce duck bag. The Paris green can then be poured into these bags, and the opening closed. : If intelligent labor is used, by experimenting, a jolt on the board can be determined sufficently stroug to put out the required two to two and one-half pounds to the acre. Should this not be the case, It would dilate the Paris green about 10 times its volume with land plaster, flour, or air slacked lime. The cat erpillars takng this substance into their digestivie tracts are poisoned by the arsenic contained In it, and deathI follows as, the result. Paris green .may be obtained from almost any drug store at about 25 cents per pound. W. P. Gee, Asst. Professor of Entomology. Commissioner Livingston Again. Editor of. The Herald and News: In reply to Supervisor Feagle and Comn 'missioner Leltzsey, as It seems that they want to get in a controversy, I want to ask a few questions. Did I mneuiton either of their names in the few words that I sent you for your paper? Now asto aDemocrat, I am onae and always have been. Now I Swant to know if the Democratic con vention in 1908 had the power to say what the people should do with their property, and if it did, Supervisor Feagle and Leitzsey waited a long time to obey its orders. They said it was the request of the people. Was it the request of the people, of the whole coiinty or of the town of Newberry? Now I think that Suprvisor Feagle.and C'otmlssioner Lelisey should provide a rest room at Prosperity, Little Moun - tain, Pomaria and Whiltmire for the ladles and children that do their trad ing at these places and do not get to Newberry more than once a year, and ~when they are there they have not got time to go around to the old court house to the rest room. I did not say that the county commissioners had the power to dispose of the old court house, but I do think that the people of the. county have the right to say what should be done with it by the proper action of the legislature. If it is sold and the money given to repair ing the jail and paying the debt of the new court house, it will benefit all of the peole, and my motto is "benefit all or none." Very truly yours, L. C. Livingston, County Commissioner. CLOCK STRUCK DEATH KNELL. Wife of 3atesburg Man Heard Warn Ing in Sound-Another Strange Case.
