THE NEWS-SCIITAR. A New Newspaper Begins Publication at Greenwood. The talk of a Blease organ has ma terialized. The News-Scimitar is the name of a weekly which began its career at Greenwood on last Friday, by the News-Scimitar Publishing com pany, W. T. Crews, editor and man ager, W. P. Beard and B. L. McDowell, associate editors. The writer has no acquaintance with the associate edi tors, but from a life-long acquaint aiceship and several years' associa tion with the managing editor he is prepared to say that V. T. Crews, "Bose" as he is call.ed in every nook and corner of Laurens county, "V. T. Fose" as Billie Gilkerson calls him, will make good in the largest scope of the word. Possessed of a prodi gious memory, natural ability, and a keen intellect, nothing escapes him. He is the best watchman on the tower this writer has ever known. He has an inexhaustible supply of ammuni tion and his mind is a combination of storehouse and workshop. He has facts at his command that he can bring forth in a wonderfully short space of time, and he is always pre pared for an argument. He has his ideas and opinions under consistent control and is vigorous and original in his utterances. Of Mr. Beard the writer knows by reputation, and judging from the salu tatory which is writteif by, him he will match well with the editor-in-chief who is- a natural born political writer and would rather write and talk poli tics than eat-and he likes to eat all right. That the News-Scimitar is for 3Blease first, last and all the time is :a sure fact.' Here is a paragraph from the announcement: The editors of this paper, being tien of indepeident minds, under' ob liga, tions to no clique or clan, or in dividual, and entirely free to make their choice of political leaders' for the next primnary election,_and having a desire to assist in fighting the bat tles of the people in their coming struggle with the forces of folly, have for that reason and in furtherance of that policy placed themselves under the conquering banner of Blease, and will with the help of God and the ~support 'of the people, endeavor to * sustain his administration, which we heartily endorse, and strenuously ad vocate his re-election to the governor 'ship in 1912." "Bose" Crews, as associate editor of the former Laurensville Herald, has 'been in ithe limelight. Now 'as editor in control he can have unlimited libo erty for the exercise of his powel's and he will perform his duties re gardles of consequences, as he is fear l1ess in his statements- and charges. TIhe News-Scimitar has a mission-it speaks~ of the lines bein'g drawn be tween "the friends of treedom and the -florces of folly." The new paper will cause some papers to sit up and take notice, and although sqme of the big dailies may treat i-ts del verances with majestic silence the -way in which the News-.Soimitar is going to shred the articles of the opposition will be a lesson in political economy. The old Laurensv-ille 1Herald, with which Bose Crews had~ omething to do, li 'ed up Laurens county for Please. Watch "Greenwood grow greater"~ in this direction under the lead of the News-Scimitar, in whose cohinmis there is to be som?thing r1iig and somebody at home in the way of mighty interesting reading, "ri:mn, rue and racy" reading. Ther-e were ai ready two papers in Greenwood city, the Index and the Journal, the lattee' of which lAas a little br ..uch daily. The scalp of the Journal's editor par ticularly is in danger of t.he po"litic.al electricity fronm the oaztery oi the B:ease organ. Following is a clippi.ig fronm the irst issue of the new pap er whic.n ex plains itself: "It looks as if the Hon. Bose Crews s going to follow up the Ilon. Cip Featherstone to Grecus ~ood.--Andier son Mail "Our coming to Greenwood, con temporary, .just at this time, is mere 1y a co-incident, and attributable to death. We -will say, however, that we have not come here to make any fight on Mr. Featherstonle. and will further say, that if the newspapers had shown ' alf the good sense that Mr. Feather stone has exhibited since Gov. Blease's election there would not now be the bitterness that exists among the op ponents and supporters of Gov. Bese." Very prettily and very wisely and timely said, but nevertheless and not withstanding, that eliminated, when the great political battle of 1912 is at its height, W. T. Crews, who can see as ar through a mile stone as any ten ien, will have his inning with the l'friends of freedom"~ against the forces of folly," as alliterated by the ve-Smar,n when the said forces are moving heaven and earth in their efforts to "bell the cat." The suns of Jupiter, the moons of Mars, the rings of Venus and the satellites of Saturn may swirl in the immensity of space, but the News-Scimitar, with the matchless team at its head, will sail the political mill pond to the con sternation of the entire opposing fleet. No keener, quicker, more active, more consistent and persistent fighter could have been selectd. The editor of the News-Scimitar is a war horse whol scents the battle from afar and loves the smc-Ne. And he won't run from zhe danger of it. -TIHE CLANSMAN" IN RICH3OND. Enthusiastieally Received in Opening in Rihelimond of Tour of South ern States. Special to The Herald and News. Richmond, Va., Sept. 21.-A big re vival of Thomas Dixon's famous play, "The Clansman," was staged here to night at the Academy of Music. The large audience and the enthusiasm with which the revival was received tends to show that "The Clansman" has lost none of its former popularity. The play appeals strongly to Southern patriotism, and the audience here to night was vociferous in their ap plause, often resorting to 'cheers and hisses. In fact, the usual demonstra tion which attends upon all perfor mances of "The Clansman" was in evidence tonight. Th? author, Thopaas Dixo., was brought before the curtain and com pelled to make a speech.. He respond ed with characteristic readiness, and delivered an entertaining address. Mr. Dixon will accompany the orgaaia tion on its tour through Virginia and the Carolinas. The revival product starts upon a tour of the imnportant Southern cities. The Fans on Politics. Willis-Do you think a man should be allowed to hold the highest honor in the United States more than four years? Gills-Sure thing! I say, if a man can top the league in batting for 10 or even 15 years, let him stay in the game for the good 'of the sport.-Puck. * * * * * * * * * * * *. * * * * * * * LODGE DIRECTOBY. * * * * * * ** * * * * * * * * * * *. ** Woodmen of the World.
