Entered a4 the Postoffice at New Brry, S. C.. as 2nd class matter. E. H. AULL, EDITOR. Friday, September 8, 1911. The change in the editorial manage ment and business control of the old Laurensville Herald is followed by a" change in the style of the paper. For years it has remained the old style of four pages. The new management has changed to an eight page paper, and -while it is an improvement still it takes away one of the characteristics of the old Laurensville Herald. We notice that the f amers and others of Spartanburg county have .formed a board of trade, and will co operate with the city board of trade in advancing the interest of the entire county. This is a very important work and by co-operation on the part of the people of the towns and cities with the people of the country, a great work can be accomplished. The Newberry chamber of com merce has a special rate for the .peo ple who live in the country, and, of course, if the country people would attend and cooorate as much might be accomplished as if there were two seDarate orgaalzari:-0. We publish in another column to day a report from the census depart ment of the population of South Caro lina by races, giving the population of each county and of cities of 10,000 and more. While the negroes are still largely in the majority in the State, It will be seen that the percentage of increase has been larger amongst the white people than amongst the ne groes. In fact, the percentage of population of negroes in 1890 was 59.8, and of whites, 40.1. lIn 1900 the per centage was, negroes 58.41, and whites '41.6. ,In 1910, the per cenitage of whites is. gradually in creasing wbhile that of negroes is gra dually decreasing. Pickens county has the smallest negro population, Herry next and Oconee closely follows. In Newberry county, the total popu- - lation is 34,586; negroes, 22,041, and Whites 12,545. In 1900 the total popu lation was 30,182, distrib)uted, negroes 19,831, wh.ites 10,351. While the negro population is 50 per cent more than the white,, the increase of white popula tion during the ten years is only 161 less than the increase in the negro population. The total increase, it will~ be seen of whites is 2,194, and of ne groes 2,210. The figures furnish an interesting study. President Douglass. The Presbyterian College of South Carolina has recently elected Rev. Davison M. Douglass, of Baltimore, to the presidency of that institution. Mr. 'Douglass' 'Wide experience and equipment specially recommends him to this important work. A visit to the Presbyterian congre-, gation is expected soon, and he will fill the pulpit Sunday, September 17. We bespeak for him a large audience.
