Entered at the Postoffice at New :berry, S. C., as 2nd class matter. E. H. AULL, EDITOR. Tuesday, March 21, 1911. Governor Blease, on Monday after noon, appointed the mdmbers of the winding up commission as published elsewhere, and all of them have in dicated a willingpess to serve. That is a mighty big company our friend L. W. Parker is forming of the cotton mills in this State, and he is a mighty good man, but is not this company in the shape of a trust. To put so large a proportion of the mills in this State in one corporation looks something like a combine. A friend has given the editor of The Herald and News an old, and we pre sume, a very rare book. We have not had occasion yet to read it but the title is The Female American or The Extraordinary Adventures of Unca Eliza Winkfeld compiled by herself. Vergennes, Vt. PublIshed by Jepthab Shedd & Co., Wright & Sibley, prin ters, 1814. The. more you dig in the meshes of the dispensary muddle the worse it gets. Now, her comes a letter writ ten by the Hon. T. B. Felder, who seems to have been in the grafting business himself. Is it true that Col. Felder was at one time a whiskey dealer and sold to the South Carolina dispensary? It would be interesting to know what houses he represented, and if so, have the overcharges by his clients been investigated, or did they make no overcharges, and if they did not did they make any sales? We notice from the Greenville News that a movement has been inaugurat ed in that city by the Greenville park and tree commission to make Green ville a larger and more beautiful city. This movement is not only being made in Greenville, but in a number of oth er South Carolina cities, and in fact it seems that the movement for pub lic play grounds for the children in the cities is taking hold all over the country. The Herald and News and its spe cial correspondent have been agitating the question for a park for Newberry for a long time, and the matter is now in such shape that if those who are able to build a park, and who should be largely interested in the develop ment of the community, will take hold of it, it can be made a success. Newberry is so situated at present that the grounds for such a park may be secured at a reasonable price, and centrally .located, but if the matter is postponed much longer, it will be im possible to secure a location so de sirable and so well adapted to a park. It is hoped that some of our busi ness men, realizing the importance of a public play ground for the children as well as a place for amusement, rest and fresh air for the grownups, will get busy e'nd do something. The proposition will be presented to them this week, and it will be up to the citizens of the community to deter mine the matter for themselves. DO WE N'EED A CHAIUBER OF COM MERCE? The annual meeting of the chamber of commerce will be held tonight. There should be a good attendance of the members, as at this meeting of ficers for the ensuing year will be chosen. While we believe such an organiza tion is essential to the growth of the community, unless the officers can have the cooperation and support of those of our citizens who have large interests in the community, it is scar cely worth while for those who have only small holdings to give of their time and money to keep up an organ Ization that is of only indirect bene fit to them. We have given freely of our ti:'ne and space to the success of the or ganization, but when we see the lit tie interest manifested by those wtio are the largest property owners ard business men of the community, one natur li beomes discouraged. If they have not the time to devote to the organization who are necessarily the largest beneficiaries of such an or ganization, why should others. If they are satisfied and can get along without the organization, why not the others. We are firmly convinced of the im portance of a commercial organiza tion if the community is to keep pace with other communities, and we are willing to do our part to help it along, but if the leading business men of the community are going to stand aloof and say, "I'll come in when you do something," or a., best give the organ ization only lukewarm support, then it is just as well to be frank with our selves and admit that we had better agree to disband. Do we need a chamber of com merce? If so then let the business men get together and determine to make it a live wire in the develop ment of the community. The past year has been a better one than in the history of the organiza tion, and the business will be turned over in better condition than it was received, but there has not been that hearty cooperation and active support on the part of the membership there should have been. The membership is three times what it was a year ago and the financial condition is better, Baseball Now Is t ITO BUY YOUR E My showing of Basel in every detail and ou D' first-class goods can be the professional as w nines.
