THE COMET IS PLAINLY VISIBLE NOW ORANGEBURGERS CAN SEE IT IF SKY IS CLEAR. SEEN SHORLY AFTER 4 A M Correspondent Says That Those Who Get Up at This Time Will Be Amply Repaid For Their Time And Trouble. Orangeburg Evening News. Editor Evening News: Halley's comet having been looked for, and so generally discussed for several weeks past, excuse me for saying that I had a good view ot this celestial wanderer this morning'from 4 to 4.15 o'clock. It could be seen some min utes earlier and later, tut not so dis-1 tinctly. Doubtless on tomorrow morn ing about the time mentioned above, should the skies be clear, those who venture out of com fortable beds,. for which they will be well repaid, can see the comet by first looking for the bright star in the east (morning star). Having found this star (Venus), then look to the north of said star and the comet will be seen at about the same height above the horizon, its long tail point ing upward and across towards a southerly direction and above the -morning star. Perhaps the following lines, taken from the "Pacific Mutual News," is sued monthly by the Pacific Mutual Life Insurance company of Califor nia, will be of interest on the subject of Halley's comet: .i "As to what's going to happen when: Halley's comet sweeps between us and the sun on May 18, and swishes its caudal appendage in the face of old mother- earth, seems to be a sub ject of debate among the astronomers. Tne eminent French astronomer, Ca mille Flammarion, announces that if cyanogen gas is there in appreciable -quantity it will' mingle with our at mosphere and' instantly 'snpiff out all life on the planet.' The 'moral of which, says the News, is 'Now is the time to insure.' We might inquire, what'd the use of insuring against a catastrophe that in one fell swoop 1 wipe out the insurer, the insured the -beneficiary." e' News also gives an interesting fhistory of Halley's comet, to "The periodicity of Halley's corn not a fixed quantity,,as the time enevery two appearances va s. 1This is because the larger plan ,like ,Tupiter 'and Saturn, 'have pull' on the comet when itscomes in toour system, this pull accelerating or retarding its velocity and depend ing on the position of the planets in *our system when the comet enters. That is why some have said the comet appears every 74 years, others every 757years and others every 77 years. All are in a sense correct. Its appearance -es have been traced back. as far as 240 B. C., and the average interval in that time has been, 76 and three-quar ter years. The comet will be in in f erior conjunction, that is in fline with and between the earth and the sun on the N.fternon of May 18. We will be in tlie comet's 'tail for above four hours that afternoon, that is if its tail is long enough to reach the earth. To do this it will have to be something Smore than thirteen millions miles -long." &. Mr. Editor, pardon me for saying in n clusion, that I do not expect to be to write up life insurance for ho expect to take it when Hal et comes again, but respect fu icit all those who desire, and ou'gh ha've, a specially attractive life insurance policy in an absolutely safe old line company, to call on or write me NOW! .Yours truly, L.
