CHRBISTIAN EDUCATION (Continued from Page Six.) nd culmination of all saving knowl edge was a most fitting prelude to that which followe. for on the very next day, Nov. 23, 1829, .it was de termined to found a Theological school, associating with it a Classi cal Academy;-and'here is the gen esis of that stream which leaves our sons, and daughters in, these halls of thigher edutation today. As the giant oak includes in its ife all the elements of the germ from rwhich it grew, -so Newberry college sends its roots far back into the early days of the nineteenth century; and is made glorious by a galaxy of heroes who would do honor to any cause, age, or country. We have time, however, for the brief mention of only. the more prominent of these, though not un derrating the humblest man whose prayers, tears, and toils went . out for the institution which is now our pride and boast. At the head of that list of heroes brave. there stands in, -eolors bright and glorious a name without whose mention no history of this college Ywould ever be complete. In the galaxy of our dead his names .shines with undimnmished .lustre, and in the -grateful affeetiop of our people will -live down through all time. To no other one man is our Sounth en church so g,eatly indebted as to that saint of God, the Rev. John Bachman, D. D., LL. D. Born of intellectual, sturdy, loyal parentage, possessed of great mental vigor, in domitable energy, and a' burning thirst for knowledge, he naturally rose to greatness, and won proud laurels in. the field of letters, and of divinity. In the domain of science he 'had few.equals; as a polemic, he nwas a giant; as a pastor, -he had no superior; and in the pVlpit he was in deed a man of power. It is not surprising, then, to find him at the head of this movement, and urging it with all his power un til the work actua .4 began'under the beloved Schwartz, in February, 1831. And when Dr. Bach'man wept over the faded life of that young disciple he urged his brethren to press on 'wad, reminding them that, "God can call light out of darkness." The need of ~higher education was more~keenly felt than ever before; and, so, by 1854 it was definitely settled that the Theological and elas siesl school, them at Lexington, S. C., be-constituted "a regular College." In 1855 Newberry was fixed as the location of the institution, and in February, 1856 its Board of Diree io's met in this town, selected the site for the college, and carried out the resolution of the Synod. 'On the 15th of July, 1857, its cor mier stone was laid, by Dr. Bachman .and others, the wails of the first sto ry being then nearly completied. In October, 1858, the Preparatory De partment was opened, with over 50 studenits, under Rev. Prof. M. Whit ie;-ean'd when the Synod met in Beth Edeno Chareb, Oct er 27, 1859, it was officleiy reported that, "our, literary institution has been removed . rm Lexington .to Newberry, and chauged into a college." -*The elegant building,. ereeted by the determined efforts of loyal hearts was finished; Rev. Dr. T. Stork rwas president; Rev. Dr. 1 A. -Browm 'was Professor of Thiol'ogy; and Prof. RobertGalington occupied the chair of Mathematies and Natural seien'ees. And, so, that year was rid!h in fruitage, and in glorious promise. The teaiehin.g force was augmented by the servicees of students J. A. tSligh and J. D. Boozer, and by a Mr. Hard of the Charleston coblege4 In September of that year Augus -.tus P. Pifer was elected to a Pro fessorship, and entered upon his duties ai the opening session of Oc tober, 1839. Then, and subsequently, his life evidenced the fact that a mre polished scholar, nor geotle manly man ever walked the classie halls of the old college! When the session of 1859-60 began rainbow hues gilded the horizon, all hearts throbbed with bouyant hope, the dream of years was being real ized. and the seed-time had brought the harvest. But soon there rises a storm-eloud in the distance; war is on the breeze; eannons boom over the hills; stu idents march to the beat of martial airs; politicail elements of genera tions were forming a volcano from avhiose fiery crater only death could come; and, ere long, the dream and toil of our fathers lay in ruins. But heroes are born in the hour of conflict.
