The .Herald and News has so fre quently called the ;--tention of the business interests of Newberry to the importance of a live chamber of commerce that we approach the sub j*t again only on account of .the realization of the great importance - to any community of a live organi zation of this character. We frankly admit that it is dis couraging, and somewhat embarass ing, to be constantly speaking of a subject which concerns the welfare of the entire- community, when there is so little interest manifested in it by ;those who are' most con eerned in its success, and not only so, but those who would reap the greatest benefits from a live organi zation. The president of our Chamber of Commerce is not engatged in active business, but he has taken an ac ti* interest in any effort to do those things which would advance the interests of the cormmunity. That he has not haa the cooperation anf support of the business inter ets neelds not to be told. Another meeting will be held me-t Thursday night in the rooms of the Chamber of Commerce, and the president has some things to say which wil affect all business inter ests in Newberry, and he requests us. to urge that every member of the Chamber of Commerce . will be present to hear him. He declines to give out in advance what he has, but we 'are sure that, it will per tain to those things which are for the advancement of this community. What Newberry needs is a leader who has breadth and is willing to spend some time as well as some of his means in working for the public 'welfare. Whoever does must be willing to withstand blows from the little ham mers of the little knockers who are ever ready to hit anything that is proposed for the good pf the com munity. Columbia is doing the handsome thing in an effort to secure the Luth eran Theological Seminary. We hope it will be located there. Of course it ought to be in Newberry and in fact should never have been moved from here, but as Newberry did not care to have it located here we hope Columbia will be selected. Death of an Ifant. On Frida:y, December 3, 1909, the spirit of Dear Thompson, the little son of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Lester, was called to its fairer and better home. Little Thompson -was spared only 12 days to be a bright ghtht in that loving home. Thompson, thou wast mild and love ly, Gentle as the summer breeze. Pleasant as the air of evening, When it floats among the trees. Yet again we hope to meet thee, When the day of life is fled, Then in heaven with joy to greet thee, Where no farewell tears are shed.
