Faithless Man Causes Columbia Girl To Kill Herself.-Twenty Years of Age. Columbia, November 27.-A man's love-vain promises that bore no fruit-visions of a happy married life blighted by desertion-caused pretty Jeanette Calder to take her own life. Her body lay in an under aking' establishment ~this afternoon aiting a message from her far ay home. There was none to mourn er death, ione to plaee flowers aound her grave wth loving hands. It was only a few years ago that Jeanette came to this country from her home across the seas in Ireland. A maid in the home of a resident of Columbia, she dreamed as she went about the home, singing as she work ed, of a day when she would return to the land of Erin and see her old friends and, perhaps. settle tdown to live. But her girlhood day dream was shattered, for a man came i.nto her life. A diamond he gave her and other gifts, and withal a promise to mar'ry, says her best girl friend. Once in a spirit of despair she cried out: "I want to die; he has ruined my life." A little over one week ago she went to the doctor; feeling badly, she said. Medicine was given her, but she idid not take it.- That very night she arose from her slumber and crossed .the room. Her girl friend, Eugenia Cassell, told her to come back, as she would catch cold, but she did not and -went into the next room. Here it was she tool the poison that caused her death. Bichloride of mer cury, one tablet of which would kill the strongest man, was the drug tak en by this frail girl to end her days. Five tablets she swallowed, according to her own statement. That was one week ago. When the doctor came she was very ill, though apparently she was going to recover. She could not -retain the poison, aid that is what saved her life at the time, but the poison caused congestion afterwards, and, lingering one week at a local hospital, Miss Calder died at an early Ihour today. Although she hinted to her friend .the one incident of her blighted life that caused her sorrow, Miss Calder would give no reason for taking the poison to Dr. Lester further than to say. "I was running short on money.'' This was not the case, it is stated, because she was offered money by her former employer, and he had told the two girls that if they ever needed anything to call on him. Tnhat there was sometuling back of the wish to die was not brought out unt.il the inquest, wieh was held this afternoon, anld in the brief statement made by her room mate and friend is contained the sad leaf from the life book of t'se pretty Irish maid. In the hospital, Miss Calder prayed that the doctor would not try to save her life. "I want to die,"' she re peated over and over again, but the fear of death was even then upon her. She said: "Oh, must I burn in hell forever and forever '' In the very next moment she cried out to die. .ha ieians wished to take her to the asylum and preparations were made to draw up the necessary papers. Then the girl grew worse. She still raved, but her condition was such that she could not be moved. So she stayed at the hospital, and deat'h ended her sufferings today. Strong men wept as they heard the story of the girl's life from Miss Cassell. And when all the evidence waa in Foreman Cook, of the jury, ~rose aivd said: "Mr. Coroner: I hardly thik it necessary for us to leave our seats to reach a veildiet. It was a suicide, no doubt.'" And silently the members Sof the jury walked over and signed the verdict. A brother of Miss Calider living in New York State, was wired for in structionts as to the disposition of the body by C'oroner Walker. The testi mony of all witnessed was v'ery cou clusive that the girl, who is hardly -more than twenty-two years of age, Shad committed suicide. Woman is a flower and man is the suntr o-ale that nips it. LAURENS MAN SLAIN BY SON. Boy Kill Father to Save Mother. Six Miles from CUnton. Clinton, Nov. 26.-Mr. Jesse V. Fuller, a farmer living about six miles from Clinton, near Rocky Springs, was fatally shot by his son early this morning at about 5:15. It seems that there had been trouble for some time between Mr. Fuller an-d the rest of the family, but the real be ginning of to-day's tragedy was yes terday. Mr. Fuller's eldest son, Ben, was ploughing yesterday and in some way his work did not please the fa ther, who whipped his son severely, knocking him (down. Ben, on going home, told his mother that he was go-b ing to leave home as he could not stand the treatment he received from his father any longer. After they had firished feecing t'he stock they came in and were sitting around the fire while Mr. Fuller was dressing. When Mrs. Fuller came in he asked where Ben was. She replied that he had left during the night. Mr. Fuller then accused his wife of causing Ben to leave, and when she denied it, teil ing ihim that she had begged Ben not to leave, he began cursing her and beating her with one of hi4 shoes so brutally that gashes were .ut in her head. The two boys in the room beg ged their father to stop, although, I they did not try to force him. As soom as Mrs. Fuller. was abie she left the room and Mr. F-uller then drew his pistol -anid said that he would make a clean sweep of the whole family. The boys had already un loaded :his pistpl and had hidden all the cartridges they could find. Mr. Fuller, however, noticed that the pistol was uniloaded and happened to have some eartridges hi his pocket and proceedel to load it. As soon as he did his youngest son, irby, ran Up to the landing on the 'stair steps and got .the shot gun. Mr. Fuller had fin is.ed loadiag the pistol, and it seems was pointing it at his wife with the purpose of shooting her when Irby I returned with the shotgun and he ired, the whole load entering his fa ther's stomach. The family at once summoned Dr. Lawrence Bailey, .of Clinton. Mr. Fuller died at 9:30 this morning. : ' Q Irby Fuller went to Laurens at once and gave himself up .to the sher iff. Mr. Fuller leaves a wife and: nine children, eight of whom were with him at the time of.his death. He1 was about forty-eight years of age! and his son, Irby, was seventeen.
