He spent Wednes day in Virginia and then set out for Washington, and this concludes his 13,000-mile journey through 33 states and territories. The railroad officers of the Big Four Railroad Company caused the arrest of Charles L. Warringer on the charge of embezzling $54,500, and later admitted that the amount would be $100,000. When that sum was reached rumors began to circulate that the sum embezzled might reach a figure that would set a new record in such cases. The highest tribunal of New York rules that bookmaking alone is made a crime, but that oral betting incurs no penalty. The decision in the low er court, which is affirmed by the court of 'appeals was rendered by Justice W. J. Gavnor, who last week was elected mayor of New York. Six members of the crew cf the Barkentine, John S. Bennett, bound from New York to Halifax, with a cargo of coal, were drowned early * Monday morning, when the vessel was sunk in a collision off Block Is land with a four masted schooner supposed to be ithe Merrill C. Hart, of Thomason, Me. The schooner is also believed to have been lost with ber crew. Tuesday night news of the death of David W. Seale,. son of Maj. W. H. Seale, of Sumter, was received. The news came from Leakville, Ark., and his deatJh was the result of a tree falling on him.
