E. H. AULL, EDITOR. E;ntered at the Postoffice at New vy, S. C.. as 2nd class rnatte7. Tuesday, November 9, 1909. The report seut out from Savannah that Miss Bennett had advocated wo man suffrage in the convention which met some weeks ago, is denied. Miss Bennett says that she never said any thing of the kind, and is not an advo cate for woman suffrage. The Heyald and News has a sketch of Bishop H. M. Turner of the A. M. E. church, written by Col. D. A. Dick ert which we hope to print in Fri day's paper. Bishop Turner, Col. Dickert says, is the greatest living man of his race and is a native of Newberry. We make mention of this article so that if any of his race or any one else would like to have a copy of this article orders for the pa pers may be placed in advance. Following this article will be oth ers by Col. Dickert. Better subscribe so as not to miss any paper. The suggestion by The Idler and Uncle Brigs to sell the old court bouse seems to us to ibe a good one. Something ought Iro be done with it. If it were sold to the town with suf ficient land all around to form a lit tle 'park it could be made an attraet ive place and useful as well. The Y. M. C. A. movement seems to have gone overboard. The public library idea is a gZod one. - Let the city offi cials get together and make a propo sition to ithe county and buy the place. If The Idler is trying to poke a . joke at the editor of The Herald and News there must be a mistake some where. In this country a man can run a newspaper and run for office alt the same time, though he may not be a howling success at either. The best 'way to get office i1 this cou:nty is to hold 'two or three already and thean * run for another. , The Herald and News has been ranning special articles from a spec ial correspondent under the title of T'he Idler. Some of the articles of this writer have met with favor. We have secured another special writer who will give observations under the head of 'Lights ad Shadows. -This writer prefers to select the name Mirth though sometimes, at least, serious thoughts may be injected. The .ideL of both these special writers is to be helpful -to the community and to give their articles a local flavor. At the, same time moralizing when they so prefer. en eSi The Herald and News is first a newspaper, but we hope along with the news to furnish reading which will be helpful as well as interesting. You should miss no copy of the pa per. If you do vou will miss some thing you will not find in any other paper. A good deal is being said in the pa pers about. our jury system, both by the editors and others. It is gener ally that way when there is a miscar riage of justice. Or rather when some people think that justice has not been meted out to some one charged with crime. The jury system is all right. One thing might be changed that would be an advantage. There are entirely too many exemptions. When you take out all the people who are exempt by law from jury service you have cut out a large proportion of those citizens who are best equipped to render intelligent verdicts. There should be no exemptions 4t all. As to reducing the number of names to be placed in the jury box we are not prepared to say that would always result in getting the better men. Even if it did it would leave too much power in the hands of the jury commission. It would be all ight so long as we had the !right men composing the jury commission, but suppose the commissioners should want to manipulate the jury, for any reason, and the number to be placed in the box was materially reduced, what would keep them from putting in that class of men best suited to ac complish their purpose. The stand ard of the best men is left to them. Better try to instil a higher sense of right and justice in the minds of the people. This cannot be done by abusing the juries. As to changing the time when the jury box ean be filled there can be no objection to that, but just how it will help to get a better class of men we do not understand. Everybody is worrying about Cu ba except -the Cubans. They seem to be getting along very well down there.-Anderson Mail. Not only so in Cuba, bui. in other places there are people who are try ing to regulate other people and wor rying about them. And why not let them if it gives -them pleasure. Congressman Aiken's bill for prohibition in the city of Washing ton 'has made the whole city sit up and take notice. There will be things doing in -the capital of the nation next winter.-Anderson Mail. And probably a little of the "joy ful' will be left after Mr. Aiken introduces his bill.
