PRUAGRA CONFERENCE PLAN. Widely Known and Able Members of Medical Fraternity to Gather at Columbia to Discuss Pellagra. Columbia, October 11.-When Dr. Williams, Dr. Babcock and Dr. Wat son started oi the movement of hav ing a confeence here during Fair Week, t., 1iauss pellagra it was thought that the scope should be lo eal. The idea was to have physicians from all parts of the State come here during Fair Week to' discuss the newly identified disease. The demand soon came for a conference of wider scope and the idea grew until now it is a full size national gathering. Fair Week is perhaps a bad time for such a gathering, but it has been called for that tim. Tie committee has not yet finished its schedule, bt it has been outlined and here is what has been agreed upon: Preliminary programme, national Conference on pellagra. to be held under auspices of the South Carolina State board of health at the State Hospital for the Insane, Columbia, S. Dr. Williams -haz just received notice from the health officers of Minnesota that they will be here. The conference will be one of thE most important in the history of the South. FIRE THREATENED COLUMBIA. Automobile Garage and Old Carolin Hall Burned. Columbia, Oct. 11.-The businesE section of Columbia was threatened for a time early to-day as the resuli of a fire of unknown origin, destroy ing the Carolina Garage and the olO Carolina Hall, located on Hamptor avenue, in -the rear of the Main street ,business ihouses. The estimated loss is between $12, 000 and $15,000. Two houses, the property of the Southern Express Co. were burned. There was no insurance on the autoombiles. No one was injured. The entire Co lumbia fire depratnient was called out 'and did excellent work in confini-ng the flames to the two st-ructures. The fire was discovered shortly af ter midnight in the Carolina Garage, owned by Alex. Gibbes. a long wooden building, situated at the rear of Wrizh! 's Hotel on Hamptoii street. More than a half-dozen automobiles were stored in the building. Only three of the machines were saved. For a. time the flames were very men acing.leapinghigh.sending sparks and coals to the tops of the surrounding buildings. 'Only the sheet iron win dow blinds and the constant play of water saved Wright's Hotel from de struction. The wooden frames of the I windows leaught several times, but were soon extinguished. Had the ho tel burned, it would have been hard to have saved many of the Main street es: ablishments. McCarthy 's stables, located just below the Carolina Garage, caught several times, but was soon extin guished. From the old wooden gar age the flames leaped to the old Caro lina Hall, which has not been occupied in years, and it was soon a mass of flames. The top was of wood and a fresh column of flames was started, end.uigering the nearby structures. The hall is adjoining the Richland Countv Court House, but the Court House was not in danger of being burned. All of the residences on Hampton avenue, opposite the garage and those on Sumter street, were threatened for a time. A bucket bri gade did excellent work there. At 1 o cloek the fire was under control. Th Columbia fire department made a nit: excellent fight and faced a se r1ous situation.
