COTTON REPORT ISSUED. hi Il Increased Demand for Upland Cot- I ton Has Resulted in the Devel- tI opment of Better Grades. a Washington, June 18.-Daniel C. ir Roper, of the United States census di bureau. has just prepared a compre- w hensive report on the cotton industry po in the United States last year. si In reference to the cultivation of al sea island cotton this reports says: The cultivation of sea island cotton in the United States at the present ii time, as shown by returns of ginners, r is confined to 17 counties in Florida, S' 26 in Georgia, and 4 in South Caro lina, or a total of 47 counties. It is A not grown, however, throughout the A counties from which it is return'ed. A The. area given to this culture in B 1899, as returned at the 1900 census, B and which -has probably not changed B materially, was 317,445 acres, B distributed as follows: Georgia C. 170,756: Florida. 122,787. and C1 South Carolina, 23,902. Experiments C1 have been made in many other parts C1 of these States. and in other States, C! to grow this cotton but so unsatisfae- Cl tory have been the results that all ef- C< forts to grow it outside of certain D well-defined areas in the States named D have been abandoned. Farmers who E grow sea island cotton in the interior F, secure new seed frequently from the F] coast regions in order to preserve its G< identity, as the fiber degenerates rap- Gi idly into that of upland cotton. The Gi distribution of sea island cotton by H counties for the last five years will be H found in table 15, and the localities K producing it are represented on map L 1, page 24. L Demand Brings Improvement. Tli increased demand in refent years for superior staples is develop ing better varieties of upland cotton by seed selection and more careful cultivation. Th!e United States de partment of agriculture has been and is now rendering very valuable se: vice in assisiing the growers along these lines. The long staples grown chieflv in the portion of the Missis sippi Valley. which extends from Vicksburg to Memphis. a region about 57 miles wide and 200 miles long, are receiving more attention than hereto fore. The fiber of much of the cotton grown in this territory measures from one and one-fourth to one and seven eighth inches in length, and the av- F erage yield is about one bale to the aere. The seeds of these fancy varie ties have been planted in localities C outside of this region the dlast two or thnee years with gratifying resqlts, N as the staple not infreqivntly com- o mands a premiiun of from 5 to 10 t cents, a pound over middling upland. I Unfortunately. few of the localities d producing this cotton are supplied ti with the ginning facilities best suited a for the proper treatment of the fiber; t saw gins, which cut and break the fib- p er, are generally employed.
