Several elaims were called up a the session this morning, but nothin, of a definite nature was decided, a all claims before the commission tc day will be further considered. Attorney Carroll, who represent the Fleischman batch of clami frankly admitted to the commissio that the salesmen representing tb houses filing claims paid "graft' a cording to the now famous allege Goodman stale of prices. Mr. Cai roll stated that the houses were no in a positior. to say exactly how muc was paid. le also stated that h knew a wit ess who would go on th stand and testify definitely to thes payments. The graft admitted in th Fleischman batch of claims was abou $20.000. To Read all Evidence. A very important point practicall; azreed upon by the members of th commission this morning was that bE fore the body should meet again, th members should read all of the ev: dence given at this hearing and tha the two new members 'of the boar should read all evidence given in th past. This action was discussed a length. the purpose of it being to fa milarize the members of the commi sion with all of the claims so tha they will be fully acquainted with a: of the details. when, the time for th setting of the claims comes up. When the commission opened th session this morning, Mr. Gaillar< clerk of the Columbia hotel. was bE fore the body. He had testified th afternoon before as to the board bill of two former members of the hous of representatives being charged t the account of Maj. John Black, wh was elected to the dispensary hoari There was one book missing yestei day which the attorneys for the Stat thought would shed some more ligh on this subject and might enable ther to ascertain the identity of the tw mysterious names appearing on t-h hotel register. Mr. Gaillard informe the commission that he had searche for the missing book, and had bee uinable to find it. Mr. Gaillard was questioned ver closely as to what means he had use in trying to find the desired book. H gave a detailed account of his searci When asked where Mr. Wheeler, th owner of the hotel was at the-pres ent time, he said that he was in Her -dersonville. N. C., where he had summer hotel. Witness did not be lieve that Mr. Wheeler knew wher the book was. After Col. Felder had questione the witness for a few minutes. h stated to the members of the commis sion, "I think that the commissio might as well put a little ginger be hind Mr. Wheeler and Mr. Gaillar and make them produce the book.'' The macter of alleg?d missing 0 de?troyed books has given the conm mission a great deal of trouble, an, many of the claims would have bee: settled or decided upon long ago ha, the companies having claims produ( ed all of their books. or all that th commission desired. Certain books of the Columbia hc tel were retained by the commissior and Mr. Gaillard on beine dismissel from the stand promised to do al withia his pow :r to produce this boo' at a future time. The Schlitz Claim. The next claim to be taken up b; the commission was that of th Shlitz company for approximate1 $18.00. This case had been probe< thorughly before by threcommissio and1 it was well known that commis sion had been paid in this State t Mr. John Farnm, who is alleged t have had a monopolv QLc the beer b)us iess in South Carolina. The firm wa represented by Attorney (arroll. wh staed to the commission that he wa ready to) admit all overcharges, an com-in'~ons and deduct the sam trom the claim, but that he wishe the commission to pay freight on th' goods shipped to this State. It wa brought out that the Schlitz compan: had paid the freight on goods ship ped into this State. while it was no their custom to do so in shippin goods to other places. Mr. Carrol 1presented a written statement to til commIssion for their consideratior Between eight and nine thousand do] lars had been sealed down on thi claim. r Mr. Dunbar Admits Overcharges. . Mr. C. E. Dunbar. of Augusta, alp peared before the commission in th claim of the Big Springs Distiller i company, for about $25,000. He sub - mitted for the consideration of th i commission a statement of the busi i ness done by the Big Springs Distil - lery company with the dispensary o I South Carolina. He stated that h t was ready to admit the overcharge - by his company. and that he was will ing for the commissions and the sal t arv of Mr. H. L. Solomons. the foi mer liquor agent of the company i s this State. who came very near bein - arrested several days ago while te tifying in this claim on the cha:rg s of perjury. to be deducted from th . laim. The commission will furthe a consider the matter. e Mr. Dunbar was askE3 about Mi - Jack Cranston. a former citizen o I.ugusta. former liquor agent an later manufacturer. but now of Bal t timore. One of the commissioner i stated that he would like to get hol e of him very much. Mr. John S. Grainger, a whit e farmer about 40 years of age, wh lives near Green Sea, yesterday morr e ing shot and killed his mule and the , turned the gun on himself, dying a most instantly. e The facts as reported here this a] . ternoon from Loris by telephone ar that Mr. Watts held a bill of sale fc ) $50 on the mule owned by Mr. Grail ) ger and a few days ago sent word t L Grainger that unless he paid off th -bill of sale at once he vould send fc the mule. tGrainger. it is reported, stated tha aWatts would never get the mule an ) yesterday morning led the animal t the nearby woods and killed it ani i returning to the house, shet himsel: l using the same weapon with which h I killed his animal. Th oung lady boards at the home of Mi 1Huck Cains, and while out drivin - with one of the Cains children, a lit te girl, she was dragged from th buggy and carried into the woods b; Sher assailant, who ordered the chill - to flee at the peril of her life. Th child's father returned with her t the spot to find the young lady in - terrible plight, and bloody from th -fearful struggle which she had brave i ly waged.
