The legislature reassembled on Tuesday night after a recess and a phone message from Columbia yeste.L. day afternoon stated that the house had passed several uncontested mat ters, and that the $5000 appropriation for the silver service for the South Carolina battleship had been agreed to, but that the senate was still dis cussing the whiskey question, no agreement being yet in sight. Neither the appropriation nor the supply bill has yet beca passed. The Evening Record, of Columbia, has been purchased by Mr. Jas. A. Hoyt and his associates. Mr. Hoyt had decided to start an afternoon pa per in Columbia. This is a good be ginning. He gets the good will of the Record and the field to himself. It is a good field and if properly cul tivated can be made to yield results. Mr. Hoyt is an experienced news paper man -of ability and will sue cee. We wish him success. EPPS BROWN PROMOTED. Newberry Boy Who Haa Merited and Won Success-Vice-President Southern Bel. The announcement from New York that Colonel W. T. Gentry has been elected president of the Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph com pany and that Mr. J. Epps Brown has been elected vice. president and gen eral manager, is of more than ordi mary interest in Newberry ar 1 throughout the State of South Caro hina. J. Epps Brown, upon whom new honors have been conferred, is a na tive of South Carolina, having been born in Newberry. He is a descend at 'of one of the oldest and most distinguished families of this State and his namie is one that has been identified with the progress and de velopment.of th6 State and section. -; Mr. Brown's success is gratifying to his friends here and throughout the South. Although 'he has been connected with the Southern Bell company for only ten years he has demonstrated his ability in such .a manner that he has won rapid promo tion which has culminated in his election to the office of vice president and general manager of the. big com pany. For the past three years he has been general manager and in the new office he will continue as general manager with enlarged executive du ties as vice president. Mr. Brown bcgan his career with the Southern Bell company in 18i9 J. EPPS BROWN. as manager of the exohange at Amer icus, Ga. His ability at that time at tracted the attention of higher ofli \cials of the company and he was sent -to Atlanta and given an important position in the office of Colonel WV. T. Gentry. In 1906 when Colonel Gentry was elected vice president of the company Mr. Brown was selectedi to) be general ma'nager. Prior to that time, however, he had acted as gen .eral muanager during Colonel Gent.ry 's absence in Europe and handled tire affairs of the office in a manner grati fying to the officials of the company. Mr. Brown is a close student and a tireless worker and his career in the telephone field has been so brillhant and successful that he is regard.ed -as one of the leading figures in his chosen profession. He is a young man and the indications are that his future achievements will surpa tho)se he has aceo:nplishied in the paist. The growth of the Southern Bell comnpan y during the past few year~1s Sha. beunmarkable and the in vest ment of the company has inereased until now there is an actual inve-t nit of $20,000,000. Five years ago the company's service in the State7 of West Virgina. Virginia, North and South Carolina. Georgia, Florida and Alabama embraced 99 exchanges, 12. 000 stations and 7,000 miles of roll (long distance) circuit. Today it has 274 exchanges, 125, J0 stations, 30,000 miles of toll c.r cuit together with more than 8,001 farmers' line telephone stations A'r servi:e and inder contract, and sabli cense (cnections with 500 exchanges, 85,000 stations and approximately 20,000 miles of toll circuit. Death of Mr. G. H. Wise. A phone message received late yes terday afternoon announces the death of Mr. George H. Wise, of Saluda. He had been in ill health for some time but his death yesterday was sad den. He was the oldest brother of Messrs. J, L. and A. G. Wise, of Pros perity, and Mrs. J. B. Lathan, of Lit tle Mountain, and the son of the late Major P. E. Wise, and the father of Mr. C. R. Wise, of Newberry. He was about fifty-eight years old. PRESIDENT HARMS TO SALUDA LUTHERANS New Head of Newberry College Deliv ers Two Interesting Sermons to Large Congregations. The State. Saluda, Feb. 22.-President Harms. of Newberry college, filled the pulpit at the Lutheran church in this town Sunday morning and evening. His theme at the morning hour was "Christian Education.'' The speaker said in part: The bold est declaration that ever fell from lips upon mortal ear were the words of Christ when He said: "Upon this rock will I build my church and the rates of hell shall not prevail against it." 7his statement was made by a poor, despised Nazarene out in one corner of the world surrounded by a few fisher folk and peasants. All history contradicted the assertion, for Mesopotamia was a. heap of rub bish and Egypt was a mockery of its former self. All around were the crumbling monuments of the past, nothing last ing, all perishable and perishing. This elaration could never have been nade had not the Eternal One, when naking it, been looking down the fu ture and seeing the great work and the innumerable workers of the 20th entury and of all the centuries co perating with Him to make the as ~ertion -an eternal verity. The Christian school is one of the pillars of this structure, which even the gates of hell shall not prevail igainst, for it stands for the develop ent of the entire man, not half the fellow, nor two-thirds, but his triune ature. It places man's spirituality first. It is this that should be al as foremost and uppermost. By fiting men to be the companion of ngels will profane history be defied. This was President Harms' first visit to Saluda and he has made for imself a warm place in the affections f this people. Tillman in His Old Form. Senator 'illman has apparently never been in etter or more robust health than at this time, and some of the thrusts he sends home to offending colleagues ~hows that he 'has not only recovered ha.tever ground he lost last year, but; that in addition has gained consider ably by his junket 'abroad. A da.y or two ago the question of vhether or not the senator 'had re ained his 'health came up in the press a:llery among some of the newspaper men, and the remark was made, "If o don 't believe he has regained his ld form just try him.''
