FOR A Y. M. C. A. BUILDING. Mr. A. C. Jones Suggests This Use for Old Court House-Charlotte's Magnificent Building. ChIrlotte, N. C., Jan. 5, 1909. Editor The Ierald and News: Having a little time .today, and hav ing promised Mr. Geo. C. Hiintington, the Inter-State secretary of the Young Men's Christian asociation of the Caroliiias, that the first oppor tunity I had I would visit the new building of the Young Men's Chris tian association of this city. I avail ed myself of this pleasure this morn ing. The association disposed of their old building, which the association had outgrown. and wiL a capital of $49,000 made a canvas of the citizens of Charlotte and in twelve days raised $80.000.00, and this fall went into their now home, which has cost them $128,000:00, and is the best equipped building in the South. The secretary, Mr. David L. Probert, showed me all through the building. The rooms are fitted up for young men, which costs them from three dollars to tan dollars a month, and are all comfortable and kept neat and clean. The average good room, two occupying a room, costs them each four dollars a month, those with private bath seven dollars and a half a month. Those occupying rooms in the building have the privilege of the use of the shower baths, swim ming pool, reading rooms and other comforts of the building, and plae"s them where they are out of the reaeh of temptation and safe from evil in fluences. What a great credit this is to the people of Charlotte, who have invest ed $128,000.00 for the benefit of the young men who may chose to make Charlotte their home, perhaps for your boy or my boy. . My purpose in writing this letter is to interest you lotte has a population of forty thou sand. Newberry has seven thousand and I believe if the proper effort was made Newberry could rais7e twenty thousand dollars for her boys. Westfied, New York, with a popula tion of four thousand, has recently opened a new building which cost twenty thousand dollars. There has been ten million dollars paid in this country during 1908 for 81 new buildings and those now under con struction and provided for will cost nine millions more. It has been the gr~eatest year of all in the history of the fassoeiations, proving conslusively that the people appreciate iL the Jig3aest degree the value of this or ganization. I believe it has accom plish~ed more for the young men of Ameneca than any other organization in existence. Its influence in the colleges and -the communities is far reaching and eternity alone will re veal what it. has accomplished and will -accomplish for the moral and spiritual uplift of the boys and men, and when I consider what others are doing ho~w much more other States are doing, 'and our sister State North Carolina is doing, than we are in 'South Carolina, I feel that we should, althouigh many of us feel as I do their ~inability to do much, yet, we should Tall inite and try to enjoy its advan tages at .home. Somne time a'go when suggestions were asked, as to the best disposition to mnake of tire old court house I sug -gested that it be turned over to the Inter-State committee of the Young Mekn's Christian associations of the kCarolinas for an associa.tion build ng at Newberry. The general assem -bly will convene now in a few days, -and if our members will introduce a bill turning it over to the Inter-State committee Mr. Geo. C. Huntington will tell them how it should be done -and with the .support of the minis ters and the business men of the county will in a few mouths raise enough to improve it and m'ake it suitable for their use. Who will take ~he lead?i There are a membe who should be glad to, as it would be a blessing to every one who took part in it. I believe those of us who help ed in the reorganization of the work in South Carolina in 1884, and who ~held to organize the association in Columbia, South Carolina, in -1885 regard it the best work we have ever Sdone. Each State is entitled to as many electoral votes as there are represen tatives in congress. therefore South Carolina has nine. there b,ing two senators and seven me:mbers of the national house of represent atives from this State. After the meeting in Columbia. has been called to order next Monday. organization will be effected, and when the vote h-as been taken a messenger will be elected the choice of the majority of the presidential electors-to deliver the vote at Washington. In a number of the States tihe presi dential electors are elected by the legislature, but in South Carolina. the choice is mde by the people in the general election, the electors being voted for at the same time the ballots are cast for State and county officers. The time of meeting of the electoral colleges is fixed by State laws. and not all of them meet at the same time, but the votes must be delivered at Washington in time to be canvassed before the inauguration. On account of his being a member of the electoral college and having made speeches in the interest of Mr. Bryan and Mr. Kern in the east dur ing the campaign, Gen..Bonham will take no part in the proposed visit to Mr. Ta'ft at Augusta,. Ga., on Janu ary 14. He says he has a high re gard for Mr. Taft as a man and for the f:iendliness he has shown to the South, but does not think it would be proper for him to be one of the party of citizens who will visit the presi dent-eleet.
