We are somewhat surprised at the argument used by Senator Tillman against compulsory attendance upon the common schools of the State. Any body who is familiar with conditions must acknowledge that the compul sory law would not put any more neg ro children in the schools that are ithere today. The fae.t is that the ne groes are taking advantage of all the school facilities that are. offered and are going to school every day that, their schools are opened, while a great many white children are not at tending school. In fact we have heard the statement made and we presume it is correct that there were at least 20,000 white children in this State who were not even enrolled in the public schools of the State. Because the soldiers at King's Mountain and other battles during the Revolution made good soldiers and were patriotif citizens is no ar gument against education. If that .argument is carried to its last analy sis we might reach the conclusion that it would be better not to educate 'at all because some uneducated men made good citizens and good soldiers and Loved their country. In fact we are willing to and do admit that a great manv good citiz ens are uneducated but if you were to seek their opinion on the subject in stead of opposing compufsory educa tion they would be the most ardent advocates of an educated ctizenship, and their main regret is that .they were not given the opportunity of an education while they were young. There is absolutely nothing in the position of Senator Tillman either in regard to the negro or in his argu anent as to the soldiers of King's Mountain and other battles of th&I Revolution. The Herald and News desires to direct attention to an article from one of the ladies of~ .the party who went to Anderson la'st week to look into the improvements made by that eity through the efforts of the Civic -association. We hope that the city council es .pecially and the members of the board of health particularly and theJ citizens generally* will note the sug gestions made by this article and give the ladies their hearty coopera tion in the efforts being made to im prove the streets and sid:ewalks of .the city. As we have stated before it is to be expected that improvements of the character undefgtaken by the ladies will meet with opposition but those who are the loudest kickers in the beginning after the work has beenK done usually become the most ardent supporters. Without the cooperation of the city council and board of health and the health officers the ladies connot ac -complish results. They have a right to expect the coopera'ion of these officials... It was the pleasure of the editor -of The Herald and News to spend a day in Bamberg recently. We were so impressed with the neatness and tidiness of the office of the Bamberg1 Herald that we cannot refrain from commending Brother Knight for the - neat office which he keeps. We have been in nearly every printing office in South Carolina and * we have never seen as neat an office as is the office of the Bamberg Her ald. and we would suggest to the exe cutive committee of the press asso ciation to ask Brother Knight .to pre pare a paper for the next annual meeting on the subject of neatness in a printing office. Death of Capt. H. S. Boozer. The citizens of this community were startled yesterday moru.ing to| hear of the death (of Capt. Henry S.| Boozer, which occurred very suddenly I at his home in .this city on Monday morning. While Capt. Boozer ha di been in ill health for some time and it was known that his heart was af fected, yet his death was not looked for so soon or so) suddenIly. ''apt. Holcomb Legion and was promoted from 2nA lieutenant to first lieutenant and captain and was discharged at John son's Island. Capt. Boozer wa% twice married. His last wife being Mrs. Stuart. and she and one son by this marriage sur vive him. Of his first marriage there are four children now living, three sons and one daughter. The sons are Messrs. Rufus Boozer. of Florida; Boozer. of New York: and Rev. V. Y. Boozer. of North Caor lina. His daughter is Mrs. Pettus Wheeler, of Prosperity. The funeral services will be con ducted at Prosperity today and the interment in the cemetery at thatl place. In Memory of Jacob J. Cannon. Jacob J. Cannon fell on sleep De .cember. 25. 1908, having sojourned here 68 yea;rs, 6 months, and 20 days. He passed away at his home in the midst of relatives and friends, near Chapin, S. C. He was the father of 12 children, eleven of whom survive him. He is survived also by his wife, formerly Miss Mahala. Lindler. Mr. Cannon was a gallant soldier in the late War Between thte States, and received four wounds on the fields of battle. He was -by baptism and confirma tion a member of the Lutheran church. At the time of his death and for many years past was a faithful member of St. Peter's (Piney Woods) congregation. He was regular and faithful. in his attendance upon the means of grace, and was an ap'pre ciative hearer of the Word, and it is confid'ently believed that he is now enjoying the rest of the people of od.
