STATEMENT MADE BY J. T. PATTISON. Declares That at Former Removal He Was Charged With Shortage Which Was for an Amount He Never Received. The State. Edgefield, Dec. 21.-J. T. Pattison, treasurer of Edgefield county, who as suspended by Gov. Ansel as a re uit of a report charging shortages his accounts, today gave out the ollowing statement: "HavifAg read in yesterday's issue he tremendous statement made to v. M. F. Ansel by Comptroller Gen ral A. W. Jones as reported to him y E. B. Wilson, his expert account nt, it is but justice to myself that the public know something of the th or falsity of that statement. On the 6th of January, 1905, I took harge of the treasurer's office here d in May of the same year, in mak g up a report of receipts and dis ursements, it was ascertained that I as short in cash something more an $4,000. I went to work to find cause of this discrepancy and 'thin about three months after I ook charge it was found that I was arge with an amount that I should ave received but did not receive and e balance was traced to the Far ers' Bank of Edgefield, where I tand ready to prove it is. This short Auditor J. B. Haltiwanger made wn to the foreman of the grand , A. F. Padgett, who was at that e and is now president of the ers' bank. Afterwards the in gating committee for the grand the .foreman being chairman, oborated the stat4ment already de.' Subsequently both the auditor d myself notified Comptroller Gen A. W. Jones and he and his ex s worked the matter to their sat action aid for this I was removed. however, was. reinstated after put g up this money, which I am now ue the Bank of Edgefield, as the rds in the clerk's office will show. e'county and State lost nothing in transaction. A'As to the investigation recently ade by Eugene B. Wilson from the omptroller. general's office, I stand ady to show and to prove by books d vouchers checked by him that statement made by him is not only correct but~ false, and this state ent Comptrol1er General A. W. nes makes to G av. M. F. Ansel 'thout maaking any effort to ascer *the truth of,it. If men of honor d selfrespyet are to be subjected to eh humiliation and such indecen s as are contained in the report of W. Jones to the governor as is pub hed in the State of yesterday, then does seem that the time has really me when all decent and respeeta ~men will surely seek other' em yment than that of public office.
