STATUE OF GEN. LEE. Bronze Efiigy Will bo Placed in Statuary Hall at Washington by Old Dominion Stato. Washington, July 2:1. ?The people throughout the whole South may reasonably be expected, to take an interest in tlie placing of a statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee in Statuary hall in the United Stales capitol." The State of Virginia will place this statue there, and il has just been cast in bronze at. Porvidence, R. I., by Edward V. Valentine. Before the end of I lie present year il should be ready to be unveiled. And when this ceremony does take place, do not doubt that there will he interest; in it on both sides of the Mason and Dixon line. Already protests have been heard from certain G. A. R. agitators, who are afraid I hat if (Jen. Lee is not ^ put down in history as an arch traitor and rebel I heir pensions might be cut of). I he real heart of the North seems to have outgrown the bitterness towards the South, and the whole country is in position to recognize the greatness of Lee and to accord him a place among the country's groat est men. I tut not all the demagogues are dead yel, and some of the (>. A. R. camps, as perhaps some of the Confederate survivors' camps, are presided over or at least greatly influenced by demagogues. There are a heap of demagogues in tho world. So listen for a few screeches when the Lee statue is unveiled. This will be the first memorial to a Confederate hero whose chief claim to distinction is his service to the Confederacy which .mywhere appears in the eapilol or in any of the buildings of the Cnitcd Stales government. There is alrefidy in Statuary hall one Confederate, Dr. .1. L. M. Curry, a member of the Confederate congress, placed there by his native Stale of AlaTtama. but Dr. Curry had other claims to distinction which out weighed those of a servant "I the Confederacy. Alabama and lexas, by the way, are the only two ol the seceded Stales which are represented in Statuary hill, Texas having contributed a statue of Sam Houston within the past few years. Hut Sam Houston was not a Confederate soldier nor a man of whom Texas in I ho "(ids was especially proud. Two of the distinctively Southern States before the war, that is they were slave States, Maryland and Missouri, each have two slaulues in this hall, but. Kenulcky so far is unrepresented. When South Carolina puts in the statute of John C. Calhoun, which is now being made in New York by the sculptor Rucksi uhl, and will be ready some time during the present year, or ought to be, then Kentucky will probably follow with one of llenrv Clay. Who the other one from Kentucky will be there is also little douhl, for the most dist iuguished and the greatest of Kontuckiaus next to Clay was Daniel lioone. Virginia has decided to puj^ in also a statue of Washington, a bronze copy of its famous lloudon statue in the capitol at Richmond. This is the original of the one on the State house grounds in Columbia, and i he one Jefferson fironttounced the best ever made of Washington. There is a plaster cast copy of this already in Statuary hall, sof back a little from tlu? rest, but ft is not tho one placed there by Virginia under the regulation by which each State is given the privilege of putting in two statues. Statuary hall was established in I SIM at the suggestion of Senator Morrill of Vermont, who, by the way will turn over in his grave and groan when the statue of Gen. Lee is unveiled, if he has not already turned over on account of the Curry figure. Each Slate is invited to send "the etligios of two of her chosen sons in marble or bronze to be placed permanently here.'' So it is left entirely with the States themselves to determine whose "elbgios" shall be placed there. The G. A. R.'s can kick all they want to and can not help themselves. Hut, for all that, it is safe to say that no Vermont senator in IStil over dreamed that Robert 10. I.oo would have a place in this Hall of Came. If he had dreamed such a thing he never would have moved to establish it. Tho Virginia legislative commission which lias in charge the Lee statue is in Washington today. They have just been to Providence to inspect the work and they pronounce it good. Most of the statues, in fact all except two or three, arc of marble. The two Virginia figures, Washington and Lee will, therefore, be conspicuous for being of bronze. This bronze figure of Gen. Lee is exactly life size in every particular and owing to a peculiar circumstance no other sculptor could have made il. A few months prior to Gen. Lcc's death, ho was persuaded by friends | wry much against his inclination, to visit Mr. Valentine's stiulio. The sculptor made measurements of his body, Hie size of his head, its exact shape, the breadth of the nose, width of the mouth and so on. Tho uniform worn by the general in the statue was copied from the full dress uniform worn by Gen. Lee at the Appomalox surrender, which is in the Confederate museum in the Jefferson Davis mansion in Richmond. The sword is an exact model of tho one presented to the general by the State of Maryland. ( i SPECIAL SUMMER EXCURSIONS Via Southern Railway.
