Jfe &uia paws i ?. H. AULL, EDITOR. Entered at the Postoffice at New" Oerry. S. C., as 2nd class matte. Friday, December 20, 1907. " j TWELVE PAGES. The Herald and News, today, prints * a twelve-page paper. This is clone in order to accommodate the demand 1 for advertising space and at the same time not t<> reduce tire full quota 1 of reading mat tor which we give to -our subscribers. ' Last Friday we printed a sixteenpage paper and today we make it ( twelve pages. We will print- again next Tuesday but there will be no pa - ' per on I'Yiday. It hits been our custom since The llerald and News was made twice a week to omit one issue ' during the Chirstmas holidays so j t'hat the editor and printers and oth- | crs connected wit'll the oflice might j have a little respite from their daily routine. We trust that all of our readers s may have a happy and pleasant '(uiri.stmas and a prosperous now , year. 'WILL WE HAVE PROHIBITION? c We publish in anot-her column to- s 'day, an analysis, so to speak, of tire " ju'esent legislature on prohibition, f 'written by Mr. James Hoy I for the ' (News and Courier. ' Mi'. Hoy I gives tire decisive votes s of the legislature last, winter when ( this question was up for discussion. '' He also shows what counties have ' voted out (lie dispensary under the ' local option law since the adjournwent of the legislature and what ' counties apparently seem to be satis- ' tied with the county dispensary plan. Ordinarily and under ordinary conditions his analysis and liis condit- ^ sinus might be correct. Il slinuld l?.* remembered liial the \o|,> i.i | |i<> i;i<| session dt tin' lenislatuiv was mil n proliihilion or an an- \ ti-prohibit ion expression. for ;is stated in the analysis by Mr. Iloyl, :i number uf prohibitionists voted against a prnbibit inn bill and practically all of the dispensary advocates voted for a prohibition bill. lu ad- | dit ion In (his it should be remember- j 'ed that a great many who voI.mI for the Carey-Cothran bili did so as a means of abolishing the state dis- ' pensary rather than as an expression of their views on the question of prohibition or anti-prohibition. .Insl how they will vote in the approaching session of coin's,> .to one can tell. We have heard several ] 'members who come from counties 'where a local or county dispensary j seems lo be giving satisfaction say | thai they expect lo vole for a | straight state prohibition measure. ^ There are others from comities in which there is now prohibition and > twl||0 voted for the ('arev-U'othran bill who wiil vote for stale proitihi- | lion. 1 Another view of this question is | that the impression prevails, j -and we are inclined to think that it , is correct, that a majority of the people of South Carolina igiven an ( 'opportunity would vote for a state prohibition law. There are always those who like to be in the majority (1 and it one takes a position that the state should he the unit on the question of whiskey and is satisfied that a majority of the pco-pie of the state i 'Iavor prohibition then it is proper that as a representative endeavoring | to carry out the wishes of the people in the state in the enactment of laws for their government he should vote for prohibition. Ot course i| is difficult l<> forecast just what will tie the result, but we g 'are inclined to the opinion that if the prohibit ioinists and those who | are willing to vote with them in I lie 'approaching session can agree upon some measure ami unite in support 'of il that there wiil be a state prohi- , hi I ion law enacted at the approach- , 'ing session of the general assembly. | It is now only a few days until Christinas and very soon another I year will close. The Herald and News wants once more to call attention of our oul-of the-county subscribers to the state- ! men! which has heretofore been I made. , \\ e hope you have been wailing ! 'to respond in order that yon might < make your response something of a i Christmas present for the editor. At least we trust you will let us hear from you before the end of the year. We shall regret execedinglv to be 'forced to part company with any of ' the old friends of The Herald and 'News and it is for you to say what ' yon desire and that must be said by the end of this year.
