The savings hanks, il' tliey eonl inned lo make payments, would he obliged to withdraw funds from the national hanks, thereby causing an additional strain on tin; general hanking situation. There was not the slightest hint that any of the savings institutions was in anything hut the soundest condition and it was pointed out that the savings hanks of this state are so restricted by law in investing: their money that there can he no question that all of the securities in their possession are of good value and readily salable in normal times. Banks Closing Their Doors. The institutions which closed their doors today, with the sums due depositors, were: The I niied Slates Kxrhange hank, Harlem, $(>00,000, International Trust company, ahout $1011,tint). The Borough hank of Brooklyn, $-l,~ 000,000. The Brooklyn hank, $2,1)00.000. Williamsburg Trust company, Brooklyn. $7..">0i 1,000. The First National hank of Brooklyn, $:t,r><>0.000. The Fris-t National hank of Brooklyn, the Williamsburg Trust company ami I lie International Trust, company were allied institutions. None of these companies had any important business connections with the larger hank- which are representative of the city'- financial affairs. Paid All Demands. On the oilier hand a number of favorable features marked ihe day. The Trust Company of America ami the Lincoln Trust company, the two organizations which have suffered most from runs, have been slowly paying out to their dcjnsiiors and closed today with all demands having been met. In the case of the Trust Company of America the run has wellnigh spent it.- force as the great hulk of the depositors have been paid off At I he close of business there were ; good many in line at the Bincoli Trust company, but also there wamarked nductiou in the number ol anxious depositors. The most favorable incident of tin day was that the stork exchange wa provided with funds ample to meet it: immediate necessities by a mone; pool, headed by .1. l'ierpont Morgan which sent about $1.">,000.000 to tii exchange during the afternoon. A all of the loans made today hold ove until Monday, the stock exchange sit nation will not he a factor in the pro Idem that the bankers may be calle. upon lo solve tomorrow. A very en couraging feature of the afternoon' developments was a signed statenwMi by Clark Williams, tiie newly n| pointed state superintendent o hanks, affirming the solvency of th local institutions. A further encouraging dcvelopmcr of Ihe afternoon, the good effect < which can scarcely be over estimate! was the decision arrived at unotlicia ly lo issue clearing house certificate probabh tomorrow. There will be full meeting of the clearing house a: social ion tomorrow morning at 1 o'clock for t:he purpose of taking o flcial action for the issuance of the.certificates. ROOSEVELT INFORMED OF FINANCIAL CRISIS J *.\>proves Methods of Relief Adopted by Secretary of the Treasury Cortelyou. Washington, Oct. 2-1.?President Roosevelt was today thoroughly informed regarding the financial stress in Wall street ami Pittisburg and is understood to regard the crisis as over. and also to approve, of the measures of relief which Secretary CVtrtelyon afforded l>oth cities. Both Senator Knox and Assistant Secretary of Treasury Howard had direct information from Pittsburg bv telephone today which was of most reassuring eiharacter. Xonnlor Knox |obl the presidenit that all apprehension in thai quarter was dispelled. Secretiiry (iarficld, who, on his recent, extended Western trip, made financial conditions a special subject of inquiry, reviewed the situation with 'he president al some length. What lhe secretary found in the west was also encouraging. He reported to the president (hat Western bankers have gradually been divorcing themselves from Wall street influences until they are now practically independent, nt least to the extent of not being embarrassed because of a slump in I he securities dealt in on the New ,i ork stock exchange. Their loans are largely secured by WVstern real esl.iite and oilier local securties and those which are based on Kastern securilies have largely been readjusteil during I he past year on the lower value of the securities. The president, when asked if he would make any statement on the si I nation, imiicaicil that comment from 'iiin was unnecessary. 8100.000,000 REQUIRED TO PREVENT GREAT PANIC j New \ ork.
