The operation will be coin-1 pleted while he is at the hospital. It' is fortunate for Capt. Carlisle that he was at the best place in the state fori such a thing to happen, and the physicians say it is fortunate that he had not boarded the train when the attack came on, as the consequences in that case would probably have been! very serious. lie is getting along quite well.? -Chester 1 /antern. Mrs. Julia A. (Vouch, mother of Mr. j S. ,J. Woo ten, and grand mother of I Mrs. Janie^ M. Ward, died at tliel home of Mr. Ward in the city of Now- 1 berry on Tuesday, October 15, 1907. i Mrs. Crouch had been in feeble health for some time. W'liil<? in attendance upon the district convent ion of the Knights of Pythian in Gaffney this week, it was our pleasure to hear and s(-e the presentation vof "The Holy City." I lie story as recorded in tlies scriptures by tin* evangelists, is vorv closely followed in the presentation ol this play, ami in conncction with it is interwoven a tinead of romance, which deals with the love of Salome, the daughter of Ilerodins, for Marius, a young Reman, (he love story reaching its climax when Salome, through mistake, pierces Marius with her dagger, taking him for Andrew. She accepts |he Christian faith and turns tiie dagger upon her own body and falls lifeless upon the hodv of Marius. Marius had also accepted the Christian faith and had resisted the passionate love of Salome. In the plav there are presented the characters of Caiphns. Pontius Pilate, Herod, Ilerodias, Salome, John the Baptist, Peter, Andrew, Nieodeinus, Judas Iscariot, Kli/.ahcth, mother of John, and Mary Magdalene. The crucifixion, which is shown on canvas, is taken from Michael Angelo's mast erpieee. The acting is very fine, and the play is a very dillicult one and calls for talent above the ordinary. Miss Pauline A. ITarice, as Salome; John F. Duorak, as .John the Baptist: Clay Clement, .Jr., as Marius; L. I). Kirk, as Pontius Pilate were very good, and J. II. Williams, as Andrew was exceptionally good. In fact, the company is well balanced throughout. The stage setting and scenery as well as the costumes, represent the period from which the play is taken. The dance of Salome before Ilerod is one of the scenes, which is portrayed in the play, and it is not as extreme as some, of the other plays of a similar eha racier. The bringing in of the head of John the Baptist on a charger, and the purchase of .Judas with the thirty pieces of silver are other scenes, which are portrayed in the play. In fact, we saw nothing in it, which could offend anyone, and it is presented by a very strong company. You should sec it at the opera house tonight. Johnson-Steele.
