Louisville Courier-Journal. i\Vo do not think that any moral! ond or good public purpose is reach- J ed by forbidding Ihc hotels of a great j centre of populalioin, like the city of Louisville, from serving drinks to those who want them, and from interdicting drinks from clubs of gentlemen?in each instance the rules of restriction and order being of necessity and of recognized stringency? ?nd, (id there must bo both equality and equity in law, tho poor man should not bo barred from obtaining what ho wants of tho noarby saloon, or "public," as tho English call thorn, eubjoctcd to the samo obligations required of the hotel and the club. In point of fact, tho saloon should l>o so conducted as no more to invite police supervision than any other retail business, than the corner grocery, or tlie drug store, and the liquor interest should welcome tho regulations that take it out of the category of crime and put it in that of cofiiinorce. That a man under his own roof may not use and dispense such food and drink as he will is preposterous. The invasion of the home, the abridgment of personal liberty, which is aimed at by the Prohibitinists, smacks of tho Inquisition and tho stake. Contemporary prohibition is fanaticism puro and simple. Temperance cannot be enforced by law; it never has beon; in Maine the most drastic laws have worked evil, not good. Wherever else they have been tried they have encountered failure. So that, in our opinion, Ihc wisdom of that branch of human ethics is to cultivate the' lighter drink#?such as wines and! beers?and to regulate what cannot 'be controlled. We believe with Jefferson that "No nation is drunken, where wine is cheap," though he should have, added "and pure." The introduction of beer in America has done more for temperance that) all the temperance societies and all the prohibition laws combined. The result of the anti-canteon legislation is playing havoc with tho privato soldior of tho nrmy. Fanaticism is always tyrannioal in ita methods, proscriptive in its spirit, and mistaken in its onds. To tho decision of a question so momentous should be brought tho forco of common sense and accumulated experience, not the hysteria of frenzied agitation.
