Smith as well as to the letter from the president of the Farmers' Union of South Carolina, urging the farmers to hold their cotton until the price shall go up. We hope the farmers will head the suggestion and advice of these two organizations. As we have endeavored to emphasize from time to time for the past few weeks, the farmers themselves hold the key to the situation, and it is up to them to say whether or not the. moneyed men, who speculate and gamble in the staple crop of the farmers, shall win this fight. We have tried to em phasize that the law of supply and demand has absolutely nothing to do with the present decline in the price of cotton. Spinners have sold their product on the basis of fifteen 'ents cotton this fall, and the price is ob. liged to go up. What we desire to see is that it shall advance before the cotton is out of the hands of the producers, and the man who really needs the benefit of this advance in price. If all of the cotton producers in the cotton belt would hold from the market ev ery bale of cotton for the next ten days or two weeks, there will be no doubt that the price would advance at least to thirteen cents per pound. We are satisfied that the merchants and tie banks will lend all the assis tance they can to the farmer in this contest, and we sincerely hope that he will realize the opportunity, which is his in this crisis. We understand that the Standard Warehouse charges 10 cents a bale for storing cotton at Greengood and 20 cents at Newberry.
