The object is to incite its members to a performance'of kind and helpful deeds, and thus to briny the sunshine of happiness into the greatest possi- j ble number of hearts and homes. Membership. rts active meinbepship consists of the people who ape desirous of bright-j ning life by some thought, word or! deed. Dues. The membership fees are not onerous, consisting merely of some singestion that will bring "Sunshine" to some of the members of the society. I For instance, exchange of books, pa-! pers, pictures, etc.; ideas that may be1 utilized to advantage in the sick room! wopk or employment that can bo followed by a "shut-in": fancy work,1 holiday suggestions, sending flowers, a general exchange of ideas beneficial to the members. j While there is not the slightest sus-' / - 1 picion of charily <*?>nin*i-1c*il with the .society, much has been done in sundry ways to tnakc life briyhter and happier lor others. Besides the mutual yearly interchange of yreetinys umuny the members, the birthdays of the ayeil or invalid members have been especially remembered; while mission schools, hospitals, life-saviny stations, reformatories and prisons have been recipients of the overflow of reading matter and clothing, so that not'hiuy has yohe to waste, not even a card or book. Frequent donations of money have | enabled the society to pay all the; postaye and expressaye on the many! barrels and packages sent out, besides j iriviny linaneial aid in si'veral eases' tvlieii it was especially needed. In South Carolina the work is only just heyun. but is meetiuy with yen ral encourayeinent throughout the <tate. We are fortunate to have as ;late organizer one of the old Paltneti) State's briyht stars i. e. Miss Mary i{. Sludor of Westminster, Miss Shel>r has been cdosely identified with the states' upbuihliny and improvement for a number oil' years, Iiaviny been for some time with the Southern Board, and in 1000 started the Jirst movement for Improvement of Rural Schools,in the south. A tireless work r, Miss Sludor now devotes her enlire time and encryies to Sunshine and has accomplished wonders. But much remains to be done. The state itryanizer needs support and encouragement.
