Queer Things that Happen. -%-s m:ziy be inlferre. pepl wh m almV u Le. world with their eyes and ear: Open Zcee A: hear m:m thin_s strange and interestin.. also otherwise. The w-rld is full of phe nomena and odd accidents and quaini conceits. Comedy goes arm in arn with tragedy and more extraordin-arv eeidents happen in real life than are lI in fiction. or example, down in San Bernar di Valley, Cal., 'two playful wild cats cut off the electric lights of sev eral to*ns for nearly 48 hours, and every hotne and store, hotel and fac tory in i e,ire valley was in total darkne-. , T young catamounts, evidently w3ile romping, chased eacl other up a pol carrying the main wires of the Pa.-iiie lighting company between the pows - house and the dis tributing point. In their play the cable parted, th circuit was broken, and every light went out. Both ani mals were kifled by the shock and their bodies lay on the ground at the foot of the pole .when the linemen came to repair the break. One of the queerest lawsuits I ev er heard of is pending in the courts of the county-Sam Bernardino, Cadi fornia. Paul Sehlardum bought a re volver from a hardware firm to com mit suicide. For some reason the weapon was defective and would not go off. Schlardum has sued the com pany for damages. Men die sometimes from exceed inly queer causes. For example: Col. J. B. Anderson, of Colfax, Wash., laughed so hard at a funny story told by a neighbor that he had an attack of apoplexy andidied with in an hour. David Dorso, of Harrison, N. J., was shaving, when a mosquito lit on his chin. In making a motion with the razor 4to drive the insect away he eut a deep gash in hiis throst.and bled to deth within a few minutes. Elmer Kerchoff, while earrying a keg of beer -at a picnic in Reading, Penn., last summer, stumbled over a croquet hook. The keg went down with him and crushed his head, so that he died shortly after. While fishing f'mm Steeplechase pier, Coiiey Island, not long ago, Charles tindbrg of Brooklyn. N. Y., suddenly disappeared, and Charles Neleon, who was with him. thought he was drowned. His surmise was cor rect. Lindberg had fallen asleep as he at on the pier, and, failing intg t.he Mater, was carried out -before he ~could raise an outcry or take meas -ures to save himself. He had on a heavy overeoat. Returning from a merrymaking *with severa-1 .companions, George Fo g'arty, of Beverly, N. J., mets death while carrying the ''dare''~ set by one of the party. Challenged to climb 'the ~upraised arm .of a safety gate at the Pensylvania Railroad eressing at Cooper street, Beverly, Forgarty, who was a telegraph lineman, accepted the task. When nearing the top of the ''finger of death'' bis weight caused the wooden barrier to snap anid Forgarty was hurled. to death. A tragie fate has befallen Signor Gladetti, the famous ehemidt, who for the Thni 15 years has been erigaged in *devising a new process of celluloid manufacture. -Signor Gliadetti was carrying out experiments in his lab ratory with sulphuric acid and ch'lor umn. These, he mixed in very large quantities, with 'the result that he was suffocated by the volnminous gas produced. Signor Gladetti was a veteran of the Italian war of inde pendenee. Although people somnetimes die in a peculiar imanner, their lives are al so saved in a queer manner. Here is a case in point: Dr. Marion Hart sell, of Noblesville, I-nd., owes his life 'to a silver 'do)ar. He was met on the street one day last year by James Parrish, a farmer, who said: ''You .have wronged me,* and I'm going to kill you!'' Parrish..drew a revolver and fired, ,The bullet striking the dol kar in Dr. Hertzell's pocket aind flat tening out. The physician was unn jured. The dolla~r was punctured and may, when weighed, show a loss of 47 cents. Surely 'the most curious present ever given to anybody was that made to an elderly Welsh couple in Ken tucky. John Williams arid his wife celebrated their golden wedding, and among the presents received was a tombstone with their snames beauti fully engraved on it. There were blanks for the dates. IKidnapped 20 years ago by 'his nurse James M. Leydon; formerly a driver for the Adams Expreiss Com pany in Chicago, found his father while standing in front of the post office at Aurora. Leydon learned some time ago from friends at Auro ra that the name of ''Sly,'' by which he was known, was not his right name. and satisfied that he had been the victim of a kidnapping plot, he determined to find his parents. He consulted the city directory of Auro ra an7tame th 7t for a week elder Ley<lon tien explained 1w he had placed his son in the family of: Mr. and Mrs. Sly of Aurora, who had. disappeared. A Good Result. Under the operation of the new Pure Food Laws. baking powders now generally bear on the labels a state ment of the ingredients. This is of utmost importance because of the harmful inoredients used in many cases. Royal Baking Powder is known to be the only baking powder made of Royal Grape Cream of Tartar, and this no doubt explains its greatly in creased sale here. Careful housekeepers are taking ad vantage of the protection which the Laws afford, and are examining a:ll the reading matter on the back of the Iabel before adopting any brand for use in the home. When in place of the words Cream of Tartar the words "a-lum'' ''alumin um'' or "phosphate of lime'" appear among the ingredients. they heed the warning and avoid baking powders containing these substitutes.
