The peti tion with the signatures is-given be low. It seems that the H1on. Alan lJohnstone, one of the Newberry del le-ation, conferred with the governor about the appointment of the con stable and that he also wrote a,let ter .asking the appointment, though his name does not appear to the pe tition as stated by him in The Herald and News of Friday. The people who sign the.petition are good la$abiding citizens. The Herald and News could not if it W11ud say ought against them and it woul t not i-P it could. The opinion -f The Herald and News remains un ehanged. however, that there was no demand for the apopintment of a special constable for Newberry. and that it will simply be adding that much to the expenses of the county. This work should be done by the sheriff and the magistrates and their cons! ables. Newbery college dereated the Uni versity of South Carolina in *a goo game of ball yesterday afternoon b; a score of 5 to 2. Until the fifth in ning when Newberry scored two rum the score stood 2 to 2. After that in ning the visitors had things their owl way, scoring once more in the nint inning. Crouch was in the box for Newber ry and did good work, striking ou six men, yielding five hits and bat ting .750 per ecent. Cabaniss played good game behind the bat, cutting of Carolina's chances by some diflicul catches of 'ouls. Scurry got four hit out of four times up. For Carolina Jones pitched a bet ter game than the score would indi cate. Davis, at short. was the brigh star of the game. He fig-ured in tw< double plays, one of which woul have done credit to any league play er. Jonel fielded his position wel and Rembert eut off a runner a the home plate .n the first inning. The visitors had onue of the strong est college teams ever seen here. Thi fact, coupled with errors at critica points, lost the game for Carolinai There was a fine attendance at th game.
