Mr. Selby's life was an I active on anid there ai'e hidreds Of ineideiit connected with it which he gave i his memoirs printed a short time ag< These, are but a few, however, of ti affairs 'passing under his observatio during a long and useful life and, a was remarked by himself just a fei days before his last illness, it *woul be difficult to give accurately a skete of his career. Mr. Selby was born near Charle. ton in 1833 and was therefore in hi 75th year. At an early age hir famil moved to Columbia, where his motl1 er conducted an educational entei prise, having for pupils many who al terwards were well know.n in th history of the state. ,His memory o those early days was remarkable an in his sketches lie tells of eveints i Columbia that are valuable contribi tionq to its history. The Carolinian and Phoenix. Before the war lie conducted Ti Carolinian, a paper noted for its lii erary value because of its contribr tors. Timrod, DeFontaine, Gilmor Sims and others. Dr. Robert Gibbe! who., distinguished himself in the profession, was the editor. Mr. Selby is survived by his wif< who was a Miss Alice E. Peers,' an the followin.; children: Julian P. Gilbert A. of Columbia and John I Selby of Philadelphia, Mrs. J. I Detycns, Mrs. C. C. Wilson and Mih Alice J1. Selby all of Columbia. E1 is also survived by three grandchilb ren. The Puneral..
