votXLIv. NO, 27. NEWBERRY. S. 0. TUESDAY APRIL 2, 1907. -TWICE A WEEK. $1.50 A YEAR Fire Eatc Th CONFLAGRA SEC Stores And Dw Water Causq Comi TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS DESTROYED ONLY ABOUT SEVENTY THOUS AND DOLLARS INSURANCE. Work of Rebuilding to Commence Better and More Substantial Buildings-No Complaining. The Herald and News printed an extra on Saturday mornig covering a story of the fire. This was mailed I to all of the subscribers on Saturday. This was hurriedly written and it was impossible to give exact figures of los!es and very lit tle idea of the insurance in force. This story how ever is printel again in this issue. This was tihe most disastrous fire in the history of Newberry in tle numbe.r of buildings destroyed, area covered and actual loss of propel'ty. Five squares are in ashes and the tall chimneys are but silent senti-els telling where only a few days ago were busy stores and happy homes, but now only desolation marks tile place. The alarm was sent in at 11.45 on Friday. At ttime.the flames were comningo th-roughl thle -roof of thle Wood~ en building in Friend street, the top story of whiich was used by Mr. R. C. Williams as a residence. I%r. villiais did not know the buildnllg was on tire uun1til the alarm lad heen turned in. He thinks the tire origiiiiated from the stove flue in t the kitchen. The fire departmeit responded promptly and1( Soonl had several streams ofl water playinig on the flams (an as there was very little windc it seemed thait the fire wvould be confined to thIiis one building, though the priessure' seemedC wveak from the beginning. Th''le custom here seems to he to cut the water off from the stand )ipe when the alarm oif fire groes in o as to get the pressure from the I uimp which is greater. This was. one. SThe pressure from the standpipe about 70 pounids, -and from the. mp, about 100 pounds. When the water was first turned the stream was not sufficiently ong to throw water to the top of b)urning building. This may be ounted for from tIhe fact, that there 'e too ma-ny streams becing~ ulsed1 the same time, thus dividing the sure. ia stated by those in authority the stantlpipn was within ten of the top. At any rae, the en seemed to have the fire un control wheni suddenly the force< ed to be cut off intirely. was stated [hiat the pump gI roken at the power house. ThisI mistake according to the infor n of The Herald and Newvs. C. M. West, the engineer at' tton mill says when he saw that tr'eamn was weakening, lhe wvent i powver house and fcund only1 Its Wal rough N TION DESTR :TION OF CIl Pellings Swept . .s Spread-Rebi nence Immedie dr. Eargle, the night man, there. Mr. Eargle thought the pump was lot working as well as it should and ad taken it partially apart. Mr. Vest asked him if anything was brok n, and he said he did not know, so hey, at the suggestion of Mr. West, )ut 'he parts back together and tarted the pump ll), aid it worked AL right, showinig there was nothing Woken. Tiis, of course, lost from 'ifteen to thirty miniutes, aid reullt d in tle great (lest ruct io-n of the >roperty which could have been sav d it the stream had been kept going. The superintendent of the plant, Jr. F. Al. Boyd, istead of beinlg at he power house to see that every hing. was working properly at that 11, was at tle ih-e ''at one of the ozzles when the stream went down.'' V-hei lie reached tlie power house, 6[r. Vest had already gotten there, mid at his su"gestion, the punip had ieen put back together and was at 6o rk. Fifteen to thirty minutes without vater with a fire under as good head vay as this one was when it was first liscovered, and with wooden buildings A1 around for its prey, and with a onsiderable breeze blowing and faii ling the flames, put it almost beyond lie control of any fire department, vei well equipped and well supplied vith water. Building.t two or three locks away from those already burn 11- were Vomistantly eatehinig, and t took vigilance and a lot of hard Vork to confiie the fnames even to he district. that burned. On t.he first of March tle board of kcalthi cut off the eonneet.on which and been in force with i the Newieirry ott on inills. It was finially ordecred o make~ thaimt 'onntctiva a ms it was 'a ried the mil hiad in it.s eistern three oillioni g'allonis of water. but it tooik It lenast one hour to make t hiis con meet ion. Wh len it was made and thme nii 1's pumps1 P were put. to work, the ie h:ad reacheo as far as the P'res, his add(itional supply of water, Mr. loyd 's residence and the one oc ulpied by Mr. J. G. Brown would ave burned, and if these had caught-, I. would have furnished a newv field or the flames to work up)on. Of course mistakes wvill occur aind ceidents happen, and in an emer' eney c like thant of last FridIay, t.hese hinags always hiappemi at thle ''ecriti al moment.'' T-he water plant should have an utomatie electrical stop valve con-' ected with the standpipe, so that! he superintendent or the man ini char'ge a,t the power house, could brow on the water in the standpipe >r throw it off without leaving the >ower house. This wvould cost very ittle and would save time in ease the bump should get out of fix and it vas- desired to use the reserve in the tanmfdpi pe.. The man in charge of the system n a fire like that on Friday should me n. the nonve- house to .1m s...., y - ewberry .OYS LARGE rye tway---Lack of uilding Will Ltely. that everything at that end works properly. The city should also have another pump to put hi the well as a reserve torce. As the plant is managed now, there is only one well pump and that is used only to fill the cistern and cannot be used to turn tWe water in th1e mains directly from the well. These improvements cos t Some r.::,u, but l near as much as one Ire su''i a,.; we had oi Fridav. It i; fiitiniate t hat no casualties r?sut Itel. O 0f coutr-e there were some larrow c.escapes. Alany people did work uider the exeitement which they could not. have done under ordi nary cimcumstaces, but even t-hose who took their household goods out, .ved bit very few of themi, as they 'ianed about as readily after being tt in he yards and streets as they joll(l have burned if they had been 1t in the houses. T".e Ilerald aild News has inder taken to ive a complete list of tile honses destroyed togetherl with i an estimated value and the amount of insurance, and also the estimated value of merchandise and household etects together with the insurance, and it. will be seen that t.he loss to buildings on a conservative etsimate, is between $125,000.00 and $150,000. 00 and the loss of merchandise, focks, ete., in the nei, hborhood of $50.000.0m, not iniluding". household :rods.
