Twentieth century science is dis satisfied with the accepted figures of the earth's weight, and Americaiis are planning to weigh it again. The last time it was done was more thai half a century ago, when, under Airy's direetion, penidulps were at fle top and the bottom of an Eng lisl coal pit. 'Thie coimarison of their timtes ot swing showed how heavy the whole earth was compared with the outer most thin shell, a shell of. the thick. ness of the depth of the coal pit. Since geologists were able to give a fair estimate of the weight of thiO 'iurface shell the weight of the entire earth became a mere matter of mul tiplication. The same experiment is to be re peated by a scientifie expedition from the survey department at Washing ton. Pendulums are to be swung at the apex of the great pyramid of Egypt and in the chambers at itq center and base. From tie swing of these pendulums the comparative weights of the earth and of the pyramid can be learned; and, the weight of the pyramid hav ing been estimated, the weight of the earth will again be a mere matter of multiplication. New York, May 22.-Interstate commerce between Ma ryland and New York is involved in the stranige story of a pearl that was lost and~ found again by .John Williams, an oyster deaeler. Some three weeks ago Williams at tended an oyster supper at thle home on a friend. In onie of the oysters he found am large, oval shaped p)earl, with a peculiar little red sp)ot in one end. Its value was estimated to be about $200. A we(ek later he went to visit his father~ at his 01(d home in Wes ton, Md. Hie lost the pearl in the yard the day before lie left for New~ York. His father raises c'hickens for the market, and many of his custo mers are in Newv York and vicinity. Last night Williams entered the Linden avenue, Jersey City. He or dered two chickens and as the butch. er drecssedl them a large pearl fell out on the block. Williams at a glance recognized the pearl lie' had lost i.ni Maryland. Liefer scouted the ides and refused to give it up. When the crate in which the chickens had been shipped was brought up it bore the name and address of Williams'- a thzer in Westan, Maryland. Liefer claims that as,.Williams had not yet paid for the chickens the pearl is his property. Williams ded elares that lie will go to lawv with the question unless .the lmtehler ire. stores the pearl.to him.' The first and second fingers of each hand are the ones. The chips used in the games are responsible. They wear the nails away and kee) them rougl oil the edges, so they have to be kept cut short.' ' The young woman said she was regularly employed by twenty men who depend upon their skill at cards to win cash for their hotel bills in Chicago. Of these, shte added, only one has long finger nails. He keeps tiem by making it a rule never to pick up a chip, but to imove the little ivory disks by shoving them with his finger tips or sweeping them into his iand at the side of the table. A traveller who recently visited the coast of Labrador says that nowhere on earth are life and property held so sacred as in that little-known and barren land. A thousand miles of lonely seaboard, along which is scat tered a population of some 10,000 people., about one-third of whom are white, would seem to give every op portunity foi' crime, yet there is no police officer of any kind, no court and no jail. Nor are they needed. The only criminal charge within fif ty ybars was one against an Eskimo who shot a rival in love. Tn addition to the resident popula tion the coast is visited every sum mer by about 10,000 Newfoundland fishermen, and while Newfoundland itself is not by any means free from criminals, none appear Pto come among the fishers, or else the exam ple of the natives of Labrador causes them to refrain from any wrong-do ing while there. About forty years ago a ei-euit court visited the coast very sunmier, but as it found noth ig to do, it was abolished. Now Should any serioius cliartge be made against a man a magistrate would be sent from Newfoundland to i nvest i gate it. The Abuse of "Humor'' Sp)artanb)urg Journal. Having beeni put upon the dsefen sive byV some casual remnarks upon Amnerican humor, Jerome K. ~Jerome' returns to the attack in current Cos.. mnopolitan. Says the British humor ist: Even assuming that humor is the salt of life, we don 't want to eat salt wiith as,.poon. But here in America everything seems to be sacrificed to humor. The rogue that can make people laugh is a wvelcome 'addition to society. In time to come doors will be left open for the humorous burglar. No, you can't 1be funny all the time. Life is life, and humor is decimal 1 per cent of it and no more. Humor is an essence, a flavor, Mr. Jerome insists, and a man who is quick to see pathos and tragedy. It takes recadler as wvell as writer to con stitute the humorist, and both fact ors must have conscience as wvell as taste.
