Natural forests are utilized t where available and massive trees are bei transplanted to carry out the plan of the work and conform to the general arangement of streets, build in1s, and other Exposition improve 'More than a million plants, shrubs alld trees are already in place filn the Crounids, cove-4-1 :--I.y varieties froml the budding phits just opening ito life to a giait iveoak whose age is estimated at nearly a thousand years. This veteran oak, the king of the transformed fordst, was a large tree when America was discovered and its spreading branches will af ford shade and shelter to thousands of Epxositioll visitors. ,The arranging of tile grounds neces itated the draining of more than a housand acres of laud in order to guard against any possibility of ma laria. Streams had to be,bridged and 0reat trees had to be transplanted' and ill many instances had to be car ried on rafts across tide water for many miles. An old apple orchard which occupied part of the ground needed by tile Exposition had to be removed. Instead of being destroyed it was (ug up1) and the trees tran4plan ted aroul(d a thirty-five aere drill Oround to provide shade and add beatiy to the surroundings. Tile Exposition avenues are to be rendered attractive by five rows of trees, two of apple, two of red ma le and one of pill oak. All Open spa ces are to be covered with trees, shrubs and flowers; and flowers and slIrubs will be planted along tile walks. Tile creamy white magnolias mid lilies, the bright golden rods, ro. ses and other flowering plants and trees, will mingle their colors witil the various shades of green furnished by the ivy, the maple, the oak, the pinr and the bay trees. Ferns in eldless variety are to be Seen along the beds of flowers, and lIxulr.iallt palms will play all import ant part in beautifying the laIdseRPc. '"owering high above-the roses, lilies, lilacs, jasmilne, magnolias and multi tudes of other shrubs and trees stand groves of pines along tile Water coursesC. Thle tree growth had an important infuence on the building of the Ex position, for the streets and roadways Im tIe grounds have been made to conform to a great extent to the lo cation of the trees in order thlat an attractive landscape setting may beC g-iven to the buildings wherever pos sible. Some of tile walks will be bow ers of beauty under natural arbors of scuppernonig grape, Virginia ceepers alnd other trail ing vines. The felnce around the grounds twvo and a half miiles long, is iln itself a1i thing of great beauty. It is eight feet hlighi, made of farm wire and barb wire. The entire fence is covered withI Japanese honeysmtekle blooming all" summer, wvith trumpet vine wvith thleir long scarlet flowers and with the mag nificent cr.imsonI rambler rose.
