MAMM1~OTH- BANK FAILURE. Three -of the Largest Financial Institu tions in the West Go Under-Ruinous Panic Averted Three of the largest financial in stitutions in the West, the Chica go National bank, the Home Sav ings bank and the Equitable Trust company, of Chicago., all of them controlled by John R. Walsh of Chicago, and in great measure own ed by him, suspended operations on Monday. Their affairs will be li quidated as rapidly as possible and they will go out of business. Mr. Walsh, who was the presi dent of the Chicago National bank and of the Equitable Trust com panv, and all the other officers and all the directors of the Chicago Na tional bank have resigned. , Nation al Bank Examiner C. H. Bosworth has succeeded Mr. Walsh at the head of the Chicago National bank and the plares of the directors have been filled by men appointed by the Chicago clearing house. Back of the new management stand the allied -banks of Chicago, which have pledged *their resources that every depositor shall be paid to the last cent, and thi- no custom er of any one.of the three institu tions shall lose anything by reason of the susplension. This action pre vented a. disastrous financial panic. - The immediate cause of the col lapse of the institutions controlled by Mr. Walsh is said to be the large amount of money which they have lent to various private enter prises of his, notably the Southern Indiana railroad. and the Bedford Quarries company of Indiana! The liabilities of the thiee insti tutions are estimated in the aggre gate at $26,0oo,ooo. Against this amount the banks and trust compa ny have resources that are, on a conservative estima,te, worth $16, 000,000. - You to know when yc presents that we have Collars, Gloves, Belts a cinators,.
