D. 25 Years. tilling Co., ' Pryor St., Columbia Honors Gonzales Memory Columbia, Dec. 12.-With : im [)le but impressive exercises the monument erected by popular sub scription to the late N. G. Gonzales. was unveiled today. The exercises occurred at noon in the presence of several hundred Columbians who attended the ceremony and by their presence attested their appre ciation of the work the dead edi tor had in his life time done toward the advancement of Columbia. The monument is a shaft of granite at the intersection of Sen ate and Sumter streets and the in scriptions on the four sides read as follows: "Erected by popular subscription a tribute to the worth and services of N. G. Gonzales, born August 5th, 1858, died January 19, 1903, faithful unto death. Gonzales. Founder and first editor of the State. For twelve years he con ducted it with signal ability and con spicuous courage. A potent voice for civic righteousness and influ ential factor in every movement for the welfare of the people. The measure of success is not what we get out of life but what we leave after it. Editorial Dec. 10, 1900. A great editor, an eminent citizen, an honest man without fear, and without reproach; his fellow citi zens rear this monument to perpet uate his memory." Promptly at the appointed hour the stand was .occupied by the mem bers of the Ladies Auxiliary com mittee of the Gonzales monument association, Governor Heyward, Lieutenant Governor Sloan, Dr. C. M. Niles, Dr. S. M. Smith, Dr. W. C. Lindsay, Bishop Ellison Capers, W. A. Clark, Mayor T. H. Gibbes, W. H. Lyles, J. J. McMahan and a selected choir. The long metre doxology was sung and a prayer offered by Bishop Capers which was followed by the hymn, "My Country 'tis of Thee." Following the hymn Little Miss Corrine Hampton, granddatighter of Gen eral Hampton and Miss Nan Walk er, daughter of -Julius H. Walker, pulled the cords that held the can vas. Atlantic Coast Line. Tickets for the public will be sold at one and one third fares plus twenty-five cents for the round trip on December 22, 23, 24, 25, 30 and 31st, 1905 and Jaunary 1st, 1906, final return limit January 4. Excursion rates on C. N. & L. on account of Chrstmas Holidays at rate of one and one-third first class fare plus twenty-five cents for the round trip.
