RIVILEGE TAX BREAKS ALL RECORD.. Will be $100,000 in Excess of the First Year's Receipts After the Law Was Passed. The amount of the privilege tax is climbing up close to the $130,000 mark, and if the checks come in for the next few days of this month as they have been during the last two weeks, that astonishing record will have been reached. There was a lot of talk last year that the enormous sales of ferti lizers, as indicated by the receipts of privilege tax, disproved the claims of the cotton association as to reduced acreage. However, an other view of the matter may be taken and it may be ascribed to the planting of increased acreage in grain and other crops that such a volume of commercial fertilizer was put on the market. The sales of the year 1904 exceeded any pre vious sales by $io,ooo and now the sales for 1905 exceed the sales for the same time in 1904 by $13, 043,38. . The total amount sold in the year 1904 was $118,oo while up to December 13 of this year the sales have been $127,257.78. It is believed that there is another reason for the marked increase in the amount of fertilizer sold. The legislature has required that cot ton seed meal -be taxed. It had been taxed before as a fertilizer but not as a food-stuff, and a great many people would buy- it for feed for the cattle and would use it for fertili zer. This is what caused the leg islature to take action taxing the .al when bought even for cattle .ed. It can hardly be realized that the income from this tag tax was but $30,000 when it was 'started 10 years ago and that it has increased $1oo,ooo a year. The rate of tax is 25 cents on every ton of com *WE V You to know when yot presents that we have Collars, Gloves, Belts a cinators, Sofa Pillows a Table Linen. Towels- al merous to mention.. E us. The farers claim that they have to pay the tax, that the 25 cents is add(ed into the selling price of the manufactured product, but it is questionable if the doing away with the tax would get the farmers fertilizers at any better price.
