E. H. AULL, rDITOr. re . the Potrfnce a New berry, S. C.. as second class matter. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 1905. Stand Pat. The farmers chroughout this C()Ilum are as a rule standing pat on the ac tion of the Asheville convention in fix:ng the minimum price of cotton at eleven cents. The convention which met in Newberry passed resolutions to that effect but there was not as large representation present as there should have been when a matter of so much importance to the farming interest of this section was to be considered. The Eownship clubs are called to meet tomorrow and they should be at*end ed because the action of the Asheville convention as well as the action of the county convention will not amount to anything unless the cotton growers stand up to those resolutions. and ii they do they can get eleven cents for their cotton just as easily as they cau get ten. If they do not, then as some of the gentlemen said in the meeting on Monday, the farmers had just a. well disband and not try to do any th:ng. The question is not whether the Asheville convention made a mistake in fixing the minimum at eleven cents but whether the farmers are going tc stand by what their representatives did. There are about 5oo cotton grow. ers represented in the Newberry as sociation and if they stand up they can control the action of the cottori growers of this county. Will they do it? Thac is the question they must decide. We understand that at the present price of -cloth the mills can make good money for the stock holders by paying eleven cents for cotton. Why should they want tc depress the price of cotton, and dc they want to do it. We do not be lieve it. What we want is to see the farmer and the grower of the staple realize the advanced price which the raw material is sure to bring and if these. people.. who grow cotton will not force it on.the market they can easily realize eleven cents for it and more. Will they do it? That is the question. We hope they will. A Solution Suggested. A -gentleman w~ho is interested in the success of the farmers of this section has a pian which he believes would 5oire the p)roblem an put the * farmers in positionl to realize theit price for cotton and we think suffi ciently well of his plan to lay it be fore our readers. Wie see no reason why it should not work alright. In fact we believe it is the most -prati cable plan we have yet seen for the solution of the problem which is now confronting the cotton growers of the south. There is no reason we can see why it should not work. Let it be given a trial. It is as follows: -Let every man making ten bales ot more of cotton deposit one in every. ten to the credit of the Cotton asso ciation. WVe will suppose that will - raise too.000 bales which will gtive a wvork ing capital of say $5.000.000. A bonus of Sg.oo per hale. This would place at the control of the assoate' t,ooo.ooo bales oft cotton which would absolutely dominate- the market. No man coUld possibly. lose by hi from the fact that within a very short time his nine bales of coton would be worth more :niim than the ten which he held befo re thie operatior began. This would work no ha--dship te merchant ci:toir from th.e fact that te market. became5 the farmer car at once p'r *it by th1: ncre-tie in Prlc\ and handle his crop as he pleases. Farmers Meeting.
