CHAIRMAN H. H. EVANS. Will Run For Reelection-Tillman's Suggestion That Board Resign Met with Contempt-Mr. Evans says he is Confi dent of Reelection. Augusta Chronicle. Chronicle Bureau, 1209 Main St., Columbia, S. C., Sept. 12.-Chairman H. H. Evans and Director L. W. Boykin of the state board of dispen sary control arrived today for the monthly meeting of the board, but each firmly and emphatically decl:ned to issue any sort of statement for pub lication, and said that no statement would be issued from chem. They said that if Director Towill, who is not yet present, isues a statement it will be in his own behalf. Mr. Evans is in a defiant mood, but beyond giving expression to his contempt for newspapers he would not talk. However, a friend quotes him as bidding defiance to Senator Tillman and all others who have in sinuated against his honesty. "Ben Tilman nor Fraser Lyon nor anybody else better not say Hub Evans stole anything," he is quoted as replying with an oath to The sug gestion from Senator Tillman that the board resign. "I will not only not re sign, but I am going to run for reelection but I am going to run for reelection. And I will be reelected. I'll show these bullies a thing or two." Messrs. Evans and Boykin said tha-t they would issue a full and complete statement when called upon offi cially to do so. If the supreme court in t-he Farnum case decides the inves tigating commission has no authority to compel the a-ttendance of witnesses :-d is without authority to commit for contempt it is not likely the board will be called upon to make any state ment *ro the commission. A STORY OF GRANT. Why Senator Daniel Loved The Un ion General. "I am going *to tell you an inci dent in the life of General Ulysses S. Grant which has never appeared in print that I know of but which hap pens to come within my cognizance," said Senato- Daniel of Virginia when in Chicago as the guest of the Hamil ton club. "Along in January or February 1865, ai young Virginia soldier, about 17 or 18 years of age (and I want you to understand 'that every boy in Vir ginia from I, to 14 years of age and upward was carrying arms at that time) was instructed by his com mander, who was Colonel John S. Mosby, to cross the Potomac to a certain postoffice in Maryland and to bring him the mail. He wanted i't for the military information he could get out of it. "This young man was in his full Confederate uniform and with a com rade or two proceeded to execute the order. He arrived at the post ofnice, and t'he inconvenient postmas ter showed fignt. He killed him. He got the mail and brought it and de livered it to his commander. A short time afterward he w~as captured. He was taken to the city of Washingcon. He wa.s court-martialed and condemn ed to be shot for murder. "A that stage of the proceedings his father and mother, whom I knew well-and there were no more re spectable and reputable people in Vir ginia-went to the city of Washing ton and laid thec ase before the pres ident of the United States, Andrew Tohnson. He referred them to Gen eral Grant. "General Grant sent for the papers andl read them over and wrote upon the back of tihem words to this ef tect: "This voting soldier in full uni form obeyed the orders of his com mander; if he had not done so he oug-ht to have been shot. As he did so it would be murder to shoot him. He should be instantly discharged. And that is one reason why I am here and why I glad to pay the respe.ct of a soldier 'to the brave, true and honorable American soldier, Ulysses S. Grant." Beyond His Limit. Boston Herald. During the civil war soldiers were very apt to get intoxicated, as liquor was sometimes the only drink they could get. One soldier, who was in the habit of becoming intoxicated, was.e,-ons'raer1 witin, by the colonel of his regiment, the conversation which took place being as follows: "Your are a remarkably clean man, sir." "Thank you, colonel." "But, sir, you have bad habits." "I am sorry for that, colonel." "You drink, sir." "I am sorry for that." "Oh, I know you are sorry, but why don't you drink like me?" "Colonel, I couldn't do it. It would kill me." Pointed Paragraphs. Chicago News.
