GENERAL NEWS NOTES. Items of More or Less Interest Con densed Throughout the World. Booker T. Washington has been elected president of the National Negro Business league. Nine persons were killed, one fa tally injured and thirteen more or less seriously injured in a collision be tween a street car filled with a merry party, and a freight train on the Butte, Anaconda and Pacific railroad, near Butte, Montana, Sunday night. B. M. Beebe, a cement financier of Los Angeles, Cal., shot and instant ly killed his half sister, shot four times at another sister and then kill :himself. Beebe objected 'ro his sis ters receiving attention of young men and he shot them because they refused to comply with his wishes. Julius T. Landsberg. of Savannah, Ga., and a conductor on the Seaboard Air Line, was snot and killed Monday by William S. Sims, because the conductor had put 'him off the train Saturday. Sims escaped and he has not been heard from since. While out rowing on Rock river, near Geneseo, Ill., Herman Meling and Ben Brooks, two young boys, thinking the water was shallow tried to scare two young ladies with them by throwing them into the water. The young ladies scrambling back, threatened to throw the young men overboard. The young men jumped out of the boat into the water and were drowned. Reports from all the American con suls indicate that the boycott is wan ing. except in Shangh-ai, where it is unchanged. Mrs. Henry Blackshire, of Parkers burg, W. Va., has been found guilty of hiring two men to kill her hus band and has been sentenced for three years. The sugar famine brought on by the quarentine against freigh-t from New Orleans is getting to be a serious matter in Nashville, Tenn. This is the first time in years the sugar sup ply has been short in Nashville. A feud battle occurred Sunday near Alice station, Tenn.. in which Fred erick Miller and son. John. and Fed Johnson were killed and Henry Mil ler, another son, was dangerously wounded. A feud war has raged be tween the Miller and the Rawlings for over twenty years. Owing to the inability of Engi neer D. L. Reig to control his brakes an excursion train from Kingston. N. C.. bound for Norfolk. VTa., plung ed through an open draw in a bridge over the Elizabeth river eight miles from Norfolk, Thursday afternoon, about 30 negroes and two white per sons were killed and drowned. The man supposed to have mur dered William Pate, of Racine, Wis., a young chaffeuer, who was found dead in a lonely road last November, has been arrested. Dr. Lyman Hall. president of the Georgia School of Technology at At lanta, Ga., and one of the best known of southern educators, died at Ashe ville. N. C., Wednesday nigh: after a lingering illness. WV. T. Boyd, a traveling man, was struck in the head with a hatchet Friday morning by Dr. W. E. An derson, a prominent business man in L ebanon, Va. The cause of the trag e dv is not known, but Dr. Anderson has been declared to be a person of usudmind and has been sent to an asylum. Mr. Boyd is not ex pecred to recover. Two small infernal machines were sent to prominent men in New York City Friday. Jacob H. Schiff, a bank er was the target for one, and the other one was directed to the office of the American Smelting and Refining company. The machines were near ly alike, being packed in little wood en boxes about six inches long, but containing very dangerous explosives. The packages were suspected and they were accordingly turned over to the police, who removed the con tenms without any- expinsion occuring. The Japanese government is nego tiating with the Krupps for fresh or ders of armour plate and guns. It is simply impossible to get any month out of twelve to live up to the magazine poetry that is writrten about it. D. Mitchell. for merly town policeman, and M. L. Fox have been found guilty of tam pering with the election returns of th-e municipal election held at New Brookland last May. The three men are now in jail. Two negro women were drowned Thursday night by the capsizing of a small boat en route from CharlesEon to James Island. The boat was in charge of two men, who managed to save themselves. The jury in the case of John Clegg. indicted for murder, returned a ver dict of not guilty Thursday. The testimony showed that the defendant was crazed with drink and did not know that he killed his own son. The city of Georgetown will soon have electric cars, a franchise having been granted to the Georgetown Electric company. While crossing the tracks at Pee Dee station Friday night, Elijah Mc Rea was caught by an incoming train and very seriously injured. It is re ported that three of the negro's ribs were broken, and the indications are that he sustained internal injuries. A Hobo, Yet A Hero. St. Louis Star. The saving of four lives, doomed to death in a burning hotel in a Minne sota town is the magnificent record which distinguishes him from hiis fellow wanderers; and, for that mat ter, from the great mass of his fellow men. He was attempting to rescue still others when the flames cut him off and compelled him to abandon his search. Not the least interesting thing about This unknown hero was his re fusal to say anything about -himself except to give his name and to state that he had been put off a freight train late at night. He did not mar tlhe splendor of his deed by vain talk. To him Ehe event was a simple matter. He realized at once the very great danger to -the inmates of the hotel and, as a matter of course, gave himself to the work of rescue. Simple? Yes, but how many of us would - have done what this tramp did? He crawled up the stairs on his iblands and knees and groped aboutc in smoke so dense that the occupants were overcome and, at the greatest risk to his own life, carried them down one at a time. He did this endangered; without the inspiration which. come frim the knowledge that anxious hearts are placing their whole dependence in the rescuer's courage without the incentive that comes from personal regard for The ones and strength. He did it because he is the hero that he proved himself to be. Not for a long time has the country wit nessed a better sample of unselfis'h service and true heroism. NOTICE TO STOCKHOLDERS.
