Davenport was arrested by Sheriff Buford on a warrant sworn out before Magistrate Sligh, of Jalapa. charging assault and battery with intent to kill upon Mr. P. C. Smith in July of last year. They are both prominent farmers of No. 6 township. Mr. Smith has not been well since the shooting. The case will prob ably come up for trial at the court next week. The solicitor will be assisted in the prosecution by Johnstone and Cro mer. Hunt. Hunt and Hunter, Schumpert and Holloway. Mr. Dav enport will be represented by Cole. L. Blease andl M-. G. Duncan Bel linger. Mr. Davenport again gave bond on Saturday. Epting-Wedaman. At the residence of the bride's pa rents, Mr. and Mrs. L. I. Epting, on Thursday on the colLge campus Miss Erie Eunice Epting was married to Mr. T. Hayne Wedaman. of Pomaria. A reception was tendered the bridal party immediately after the cere mony. Good Work of Congressman Aiken. Congressman Aiken has received notice from the fourth assis:ant post master general that a new rural de livery route has been established from Kinards and will commence on Au gust 15. Mention of this route was made in The Herald and News some time ago when Mr. Veasy was here. It will go a little ways into Laurens county and will serve a large section of people who have been in need of more prompt delivery of the mail. Library Free. The library will be opened to all persons who desire to use it on Mon days, Tuesdays, Fridays and Satur days of each week from 5 to 7.30 p. m. The librarian will be present and every one who desires it may use the books during the time mentioned, but no books will be allowed to be taken out except as now provided by the rules. Exchange Bank. A meeting of the subscribers to the capital stock of the Exchange bank will be held at the council chambers on Saturday the 24th for the purpose of electing a board of directors. The bank will open for business as soon as the charter is secured. As already stated the store room recently vacat ed by the Cash Store between the drug store of Gilder. Weeks & Hun ter and S. B. Jones has been secured for the use of the bank. Bonds Voted. At the election on Friday on the question of authorizing the issue of $24,ooo in bonds of the town to take up past indebtedness there were 88 votes cast for the issue and none against. As soon as we vote out the dis pensary we will have to amend our charter so as to leyy four mills ad ditional for ordinary town purposes. News From Excelsior. Excelsior, June 19.-We are very dry in this section and needing rain badly. Miss Chelsy Kibler spent Sunday with relatives in Newberry. Mrs. Sarah Fellers has been on a visit to Mr. J. A. C. Kibler's family. Mr. Ira Nates. of Columbia, has been spending a few days at his home here. Miss Jennie Lee Kinard. of Little Mountain, is visiting Misses Alderra and Nannie Wheeler. The patrons ~of Excelsior school will hold a meeting this Tuesday af ternoon at 5 o'clock. Glad to see the Christian people 01 Newberry county are banding togeth er and are going to vote out the dis pensary from the county. To Be Held In Central Methodist Church-Bishop Candler to Preside. The Cokesbury district conference is to be held in Central Methodist church beginning on July 5. Bishop W. A. Candler will preside. Arrangements are already being made for the entertainment of the conference. At a meeting of the congregation on Sunday the following committee was appointed to secure homes: W. H. Wallace, Chairman; C. H. Can non, R. L. Tarrant and Jno. H. Wick er. Teacher Elected. Miss Essie Pearson has been elect ed by the patrons of St. Philips school in No. ii as teacher for the next term. The school will run for six months. Why Mr. Ryan Bought. The State. Ever since the purchase of the Hyde stock in the Equitable Life As surance society by Mr. Thomas F. Ryan there has been considerable speculation on the part of the public as to the motive which prompted the latter gentleman to pay a sum rang ing, according to different statements, from $2,500,000 to $4,000,000 for a bunch of stock having a par value of only $50,200 and from which there are no profits save the regular 7 per cent; dividend. The capital stock of the Equitable company is $ioo,ooo, divided into i,ooo shares of a par value of 00 each. Mr. Ryau bought 502 shares of this stock, a controlling interest. The par value of these 502 shares is $50, 200. But Mr. Ryan paid some mil lions for them. Why did he do it? For it is to be remembered that every cent of the profits of the company 'belongs to the policyholders. The dividend on the stocq is limited to 7 per cent. annually; beyond that the stockholder gets no return. Seven per cent upon the $50,200 which rep resents the par value of the stock bought by Mr. Ryan would be $3, 514, the sole income from the invest ment. Why did Mr. Ryan pay from $2,500,000 to $4,000,000 for a block of stock which could not bring in a re turn of more than $3,514, no more that a factional interest upon the cap ital invested? What was the explanation? Was Mr. Ryan merely a benevolent man who, in order to save the 60o,o00 Equitable policyholders from further distraction, bought in the Hyde stock at an immense personal sacri fice, 'believing virtue to be its own re ward? Or, base suspicion! was it the purpose of Mr. Ryan to secure con trol of the millions of the Equitable and by a manipulation in "frenzied finance" make a profitable business out of what see:ned to be a foolish and extravagant investment? The question remained open. The reason of Mr. Ryan's extraordinary pur. chase stood unrevealed.. -Now at las: comes a hint of what is d (eclared to .he the truth. Mr. Ryan, it seems f acted as the agent of the great finan y cier. It remains to bi COUNTY SUMMER SCHOOL. The Session Opened Yesterday Morn ing-Teachers, Pupils and Text Books. The county summer school for teachers opened on Monday morning at 9 o'clock in the Boundary street school building. Short practi cal talks were made by Professors Setzler, Pugh and Abrams and a gen eral outline of the work was given by Prof. J. S. Wheeler who urged the student-teachers to take the full course.. The faculty, consisting of Prof. E. B. Setzler, Prof. G. T. Pugh, and Miss Elizabeth Dominick, made announce ments to their classes, and regular work will begin at once. The prescribed text books are: Wentworth's Arithemetic and Albe bra, Frye's Geography, Beuhler's English Grammer, Peterman's Civil Government and Chapman's History of South Carolina.
