A TALE OF TWO SCOUTS. Narrow Escape From a Rattler and a Band of Indians. In Cyrus Townsend Brady's "In dian Fights and Fighters" is a tale ol two scouts, Trudeau and Stillwell, who carried to General Carpentei -through an Indian infested country -the news that Major Forsyth was being besieged in the sands of Beech r's island by a thousand warriors. ,Iiere is one incident of their journey: "During this day a large party of -scouting Indians halted within ioe -eet of the wallow where the scouts -were Aiding. Simultaneously with -their arrival a wandering rattlesnake 1made its appearance in front of the -1.> scouts, who were hugging the ,earth and expecting every minute to ;be dis.covered. "In his way the rattlesnake was as .-eadly as the Indian. The scouts -could 'have killed him easily had it mot been for the proximity of the heyennes. To make the slightest -novement would call attention to their hiding place. Indeed, the sinis ter rattle of the venomous snake before he struck would probably at tract the notice of the alert Indians. Between the savage reptile and the -savage men the scouts were in a frigIttful predicament which young 'Stillwell, a lad of amazing resources, ,instantly and effectually solved. "He was chewing tobacco at the time, and as the snake drew near him and made ready to strike Stilwell -completely routed him by spitting to bacco juice in his mouth and eyes and ..aU over- his head. The rattlesnake --fled. He could not stand such a dose. The Indians presently moved on, hav ing noticed nothing, and so ended -.erhaps the most terrible half hour :1he two men had ever experienced." The Darky's Distinction. Kansas City Star. A traveling man who "makes" KCansas City frequently was dining in the cafe of one of the .largest hotels -yesterday when he thought 'he'd play a trick on his waiter. "See that man -at the next table, George?" he said. The waiter nodded assent. "Tiat's Dr. Alonzo Tubbs, the Missouri legislator, who is trying to -stop all 'tipping." The waiter grew *3nterested at once. "Well, ain't dat too bad." 'he said. "Ah's 'been waitin' on him too." "Well, you won't get any tip there,'' :said the traveling man. "Ah suttingly treated him right," treplied the wai.ter. A few minutes later the man at the -other table left and the waiter return ed to thec traveling man. "Will." said the drummer, "what idid I till you?" "'Xe-use me, sah, but Ah thinks -you-ie me er fabrication," sa5d the waiter, grinning. "Dat man ain-t a ilegislatSh-he's a gentleman." -lIite-main 'had given him a quarter. 'The Same One. 'Xper~s Weekly. ?A-younig country minister who had lbeen-presented with a horse by a 'ridt -farmer parishioner rode the ani -ma~l~homre to exhibit him to his father. The old gentleman studied the horse carefuIy aind observed that he seemed wery' -gd and infirm. "We!, faeher," said his son. "I d -on't thi:ik you ought to complain of iim., ev-> if he is old and feeble. It is ;' wnd deal better animal than our S-m'ur rode into Jerusalem :nineteen hunidred years ago." "I don't know, John," replied his fathei : "I think it's :ne same animal."
