WRECK OF ODGEN SPECIAL. Blames The Crew-Many Prominent Railroad Men Testify at the Hearing. The following special to the Spar tanburg Herald gives the result of -c hearing before the railroad com missioners as to the Odgen wreck: Before the railroad commission the officials and employes of the Southern - iailway testified as to the circumstan ces surrounding the wreck of the special bearing the party of Mr. Robi. C. Ogden at Greenville. April 'A will be remembered that the nm.; running at the rate of 40 miles an Jour. -crashed into some empty -reght cars standing on the main line .Ithin the yard limits. From the bulk of the evidence it app,ars that the railroad people are 'ilmng to admit tha: the crew in -Zharge of the special train is at fault. 'The issue devolves upon the question -whcther or not this was a train of the :arst class. The crew in charge claim that it was, as it was being operated on an order which contained a de tailed schedule between Spartanburg -and Greenville. which is according to her way of looking at it. an amend ment to the regular schedule. Engin -er J. R. Hunter. who was crippled n .*e wreck and Conductor Acker :took the stand. The rule governing the conduct of -;ards in cities states: "Switching and :other trains and engines may work -within limits without regard to sec ond class and inferior. trains which 1atter must approach and run through yard limits under full control, expect ing to find main track blocked. in eas-e of accident, responsibility rests with the approaching train." While it was in evidence that there wa- carelessness regarding the hand ling of messages in regard to the special at Greenville. still it was tes tified by the officials that this would not effect the result and that Engin Ier -hunter should have come into the var d limits with his zra;n under such Jontrol 1hat he co:ld stop within half -Ihe d1stance he could see. Division Sup-:rintendent Williams. Baker and -McManu; and General Manager H. B. Spencer of the Southern and Engin zeer 1.ineberger of Charlotte. testified Thar there was but one way of con strng the orders received by En ginc- Hiun:er and that was that his was no: a nrat class train and that he should have had his train under -nerfect control when he approached :he Greenville station. The Southern -showed by its correspondence that *.very effort was made to handle wvith -success the movement of this impor tant train. Engineer Hunter was fa -mni]iar with the road and was selected 'to take the train from Columbia a tGreenville for that reason. "The Newberry College Catalogue. :Newberry, S. C.. May 23, 1905 To the Editor of The Herald and -News. 'Sir: There art two misstate ment,s in your criticism of the New beery college catalogue that seem to be,wor'thy of attention. n. 'The work was not given to a ~Nort.h Carolina printer because "there ais nzo-printing house in this state that con1ld measure up to the s:andard," but sumply because the North Caro llina house (unsolicited) offered lowver -terms for high-grade work than wxere sproposed by any other firm. The cat saloguie on'st no more this year than ojsual. 2.The roll of the alumni was not omitted because "old things are pass ed away and there is no longer room for this roll," in the metaphorical sense that your language conveys; ibut literally because the college has grown to the point where there is no longer room for an adequate roster of abe alumni in the ordinary catalogue. 'It is therefore proposed to print a separate catalogue that will give not nly-t'he names, but also brief sketch es o all the graduates and former studenlts, wherever :he information can be obtained. James A. B. Scherer. atwas not ourt purpose to have any conitroversy with the learned and dis ringuish ed president of Newberry col 'iege a regard to his ca:alogue. So rar as we are concerned i: would have suited our convenience if he had had his catalogue printed in Japan, just :.s well as sa his native state. It does -ot matter 'to us whether it cost less 'e more, yet we might be permitted OFFICE OF FARM HEADQU Begin now to sow P food at home. Be ir Improve your farrns. Live Stock to remark in passing that sometimes it is good judgement to stand to your friends true and tried, because the time may come when you will need them. As to the roll of the alumni it would not have taken as much room to put their names in or cost as much to print another catalogue but that is no concern of ours. and we do not care to discuss the question. We felt we had a right to express our regrets at not having the roll of the alumni in the college catalogue because it was always a pleasure to look oved it and see where our friends were loca:ed and assiF,-d us to keep pi with our brother alumni. This ed itor has been a friend of Newberry college for twenty eight years since he first matriculated as a sophomore in 1877. He has had three brothers and one son to graduate there, about as good record as any other , one family, we presume, and it was out desire that the other boys of our own family should graduate there al so, but that is impossible now. Still we feel an interest in the College and want to see it succeed. Men will come and men will go but we hope the college may live long after they are gone. Our sta:ements were not "mis tatements" after all. The catalogue which had been printed in South Car I0lina for twenty eight years to our knowledge was printed in North Car oliua this year. The roll of the alum ni was left o-:. These were the state ments made. They- arc true. The rason1s we give may not be correct. hmt there is n:o "misstatemenlt.' Commencement at Newberry.
