KERSHAW'S BRIGADE. Some Errors That Should Be Cor rected in the Next Edition of its History. To the E!it r of thc Sunda. New%: In ;899 the Elbert H1. Aull company of Newbcrry, published a History of Kershaw's Brigade, by Capt. D. Au gustus Dickert. Chief Justice Y. J. Pope wrote the introduction and the book has been approved by the state board of education for the school libraries recently provided for. Last week two gentlemen from the country who had been reading the book re marked that it was interesting and Chief Justice Pope had commended it for accurcv. Notwithstanding Judge Pope's en dorsement there are mistakes in the book that should be corrected. The approval of the state board of educa tion does no: cure these .1ciects. On page 269 the author. speaking of Gen. George H. Thomas at Chica mauga, says: "He and Gen. Hunt, of South Carolina, who so ably com manded the artillery of GeV. Meade at Gettysburg. were two of the most illustrious of Southern renegades.' Gen. Hun: was not a renegade South Carolinian. In Gen. Cullum's 'Biographical Register of Officers and Graduates of the United States Military Academy," it is stated that "Henry Jackson Hunt was born in Detroit, Michigan. On page So. speaking of the duel between Capt. Elbert Bland and Ma jor Emmet Seibels. the author sayz: "It was many- months before Major Seibels was sufficiently recovered f-om his wound to return to duty. Tne matter was kept quiet and no ac tion was taken. Major Seibels died the following year." etc, etc. There I Is a mistake in this statement. Major Seibels died December 19. 1898 at the age if 78 years in Montgomery. Ala. ie was a special agent of the United Sta;es interior department by ap pointment of President Cleveland. On page 402 an incident is mention ed abut the ion. George Clark San ders. adjutant general. meeting with a Ine looking Federal officer hobb ling out of the "Crater" using two guns reversed for crutches and that it was Gen. Bartlett, who said he had lost his leg a year before at Spotts ylvania and only his wooden lew was sho: off that day. The Crater was fought July 30. 1864. and Spottsyl vania May 12. 1864. and it is not like ly that Gen. Bartlett could have re covered and entered another battle in two-months and a half. There was no George Clark Sanders, but there was Adjt. Gen. George Clark on the saff of Gen. John C. Sanders, of Ala- i bama.
