NO CLOCKS IN LIBERIA. Because of Latitude Sun Serves fo: Practical Purposes. New York S2rn. \ yonn.:l negra fr m ibe1) ria ;eorge 11. N rtham. I1 nx visitmIn :his cotuntry. from which his parent: tmigrated tU :he negro republic -nan1 years ago. In a talk with a Sun re pocrter he spoke of an interesting phase ot the trade of Liberia. "In the towns.- he said. "the mor well to do inhabitants import a var ety of household conveniences. an< even luxuries, most of them comin .rom Europe. Our trade with the U nited States is not as large as it use( to be when we had direct vessel con nections between New York an( Monrovia. There are very few piano; among us, but nearly every house ha, its melodeon. ranging from the veri cheapest to the best quality. "It iS a curious fact tha: we bui very few clocks. They are regarded I know. as an essential part of th furnishings of the home in all civi lized countries. The comparativel, small number of our people who hav :airly good incomes have clocks ii their houses. But most of the Liber .ans are farmers and laborers an< they never think of purchasing clock. The fact is, they have littl< use for clocks. and I think the reaso will interest you. "You know, our country is only few degrees north of the equatot The result is that for a good part o the year the sun rises at exactly i o'clock or within a few minutes of i and sets at 6 o'clock. Here are tw< points of time quite accurately fixe< for us. "Then when the sun is directly ov erhead it is noon. Of course, the su in its apparent movements betweei the Tropics of Cancer and Capricor varies a little in these positions, bu only a little anywhere in the tropic, and the most ignorant of our peopl soon become expert in determinini the time for all positions of the sun. "I do not suppose there is a man o woman in Liberia who cannot te) the time in any part of the day withi: fifteen minutes of the true time an, usually with a closer approximatior When the farmer is in the field h knows exactly when to go home t dinner, and his wife has the mea waiting for him as he reaches th house. "If he has an appointment at 3 in., and also the habit of punctualit he meets his engagement almost o the minute. Our farmers say tha they have no use at all for clock I presume. Liberia is the only countr with any claim to civilization the does not regard clocks as necessar in the business of life. "I am told that down in the Cor go Free State the missionaries teac the natives to read the informatio that a clock gives. This is very we as a matter orf education, but the nm fives understand the relation of th sun to the time of day as well as w do, and I do not think a large numbe of clocks will ever be sold there." An Offended Bishop. Youth's Companion. "Bishop Maxwell, is it not?" inquia ed Mrs. Spaulding cordially as h< guest came down to breakfast. su * case in hand. "I feel that I know yc through my son, and I was soga when he arranged to have you sta with us on your way through the cit: But what does this luggage mear You're going to stay a day or so?" "No, thank you, Mrs. Spaulding returned the bishop. "I must go rigl on today." "Oh, that makes it doubly unfo tunate that I had to be away la evening. I hope you found my me sage of explanation? The friend was called to was very ill, and I fe sure you would understand, but tI fact that Mr. Sqaulding was out< town, too, made me regret goir especially, I do hope my maid toc care of you comfortably and that y< rested well. I thought you must ha, been weary when I came in at 10 ar found you had retired." The bishop replied politely, b there was an odd constraint in h' manner which lasted until he h bowed himself out of the house aft breakfast. "What can. be the matter?" puzzl< Mrs. Spaulding as she watched tl 'distinguished gentleman stalkir down the street. "Dick was so a What Shall We Have for Dessert? A week or two earlier. when Dick was coming hume -or a college vacation. she had unearthed some of these old signs and just for a joke hadh pinne them up in his room, like old times. They had been -taken down later. buLit she remember ed now -,at, after being summoned to the cick friend the morning before. she had led her new-and not bril liant-maid to Dick's door and had said: "I want this room swept and 1 arranged for Bishop 'Maxwell exactly as we di: it for Mr. Dick last week. Do vou understand?" With wings on her feet Mrs. Spauld i ing flew to the room the bishop had occupied, but at the threshold she f paused and gasped. 5 On one of the pillows was a star t ing notice to this effect: "Please put 3 your bed airing in the morning!' I Over the mirror, "Please don't spat ter the glass!" On the window cur - tain, "Please don't throw your shoes i on the floor noisily!" Everywhere, on a pictures and wall: "Please don't a leave vur coat on a chair. Hang it t up!" "Please don't leave your tooth i brush in the bathroom!" "Please turn e off the hot water faucet!" There were at least fifteen of these placards, the "Please" underlined r three of four times in each, but-hor I ror of horrors-the largest of all wai n this, on the inside of the door: "I I you take a bath please wash out the ,. tub. . It's disgraceful not to!"' e D Little Willie had been told that he must always wait patiently till he -was served at meals, and not crv across the table or grab for his food . One day, while dining at a neigh ybor's with his mother, the little fel low was accidentally cverlooked. He t was very patient for a time, but al . last he could bear t:he strain no long y er of seeing everybody feeding bu1 e himself. So, leaning quietly acros: , to his mother, he said, in a lotu whisper: . "Mother, do little boys who starvi to death go to Heaven?"-Londoi n Tid-Bits. .Special Rates Via A. C.
