Col. Stephen D. Renfree, a lawyer g about 77 years old, was convicted at Fayetteville, Ga., on Thursday after- o non of the murder of his daughter-in law. The jury recommended him to mercy and he was sentenced to life t imprisonment. Skinner shot and instant. ly kiled Miller Anderson. near Dun barton, in Barnwell county, on Thursday morning. Mr. Anderson was a planter, Mr. Skinner a mer chant, and both men with families. About a month ago. it is reported, the two men had a difficulty. On Thursday morning, while Skinner was bird hunting, he met Anderson. The Columbia, correspondent of the News and Courier says that a little education has been a dangerous thing to David Lorick, colored, of Richland county. He went to school and learned how to write and on Sat urday he was arrested for passing three checks, on all of which he had forged the signatures. At each of the places he told a -story about his being paid for wood or something of the sort, and that the purchaser had no money, but paid by check. He used the checks in payment of goods, but generally managed to get a part in money. Lorick is a lad of about six teen or seventeen years, and is now in jail pending trial. If in doub: about a medicine a wise man tries it on his wife's dog. It is easier to give good advice than it is to earn a decent living. Nothing beats a good wife--except 4 a bad husband.
