The cat had been captured in a swamp and held for several days, -when she was liberated and the chase began. As a result of the primary held ir. Greenwood on Friday Messrs. Ken neth Baker and W. H. Kerr will be the two candidates for mayor to be voted for in the regular election in April. While out huntinf in Glassy Moun :ain township, Greenville county, Dudley Hunter, aged 14 years, shot and instantly killed his young friend, Patrick Davis. The killing is said to have been purely accidental. St. Patrick's day was generally ob served and celebrated in Charleston ,on Friday. The anniversary dinner ocf the Hiberian society, which is the leading celebration, brought a distin guished company together. Gover -nor Heyward responded to the toast, "South Carolina." The report comes from Orange -burg that on Thursday of week be -fore last a lttle eight year old girl was criminally assaulted in Cow Castle township, that county, by a segro, William Johnson. Ihe -.e -gro has been placed under arrest He &nies the crime. Passenger train No. io, bound for Columbia from Asheville, was wrecked near Spartanburg on Friday night. he fireman was slightly bruised, the remainder of the train crew and the passengers escaping with a consider able jar. The accident was caused by the locomotive splitting the switch. It is learned definitely that for the present Monarch Cotton mills and Aetna Cotton mills of Union, and in the coun:y Locklart mills and the knitting and yarn mills operated by the Jonesville Mfg. co., will not adopt the io-hour system, but will run the same hours as formerly. This action is not made for any specified time .and it is intimated that the operatives will be looked after in other ways. There has been considerable confu ~sion in regard to an act passed by the legislature recently. Up to that time the law had required the payment of -one mill on every dollar of capitaliza tion of companies being chartered, when such .capitalization is less than $ioo, ooo. But a new law requires the payment of not less than $10 for any charter fee. Heretofore when a com pany of $5,ooo capitalization was giv en a carter, the fee was $5; now it is $10. Gov. Heyward has pardoned John Cooper, who was recently trie- or murder in Darlington county and convicted of manslaughter. The people of Darlington wanted the ne gro pardoned, and some seemed to think that nothing but the eloquence of the solicitor, Mr. J. Monroe John son, caused the jury to bring in a ver dict of guilty. The legislature of the state of Maine at its recent session passed resolu tions warmly commending the servic es of Miss Lenora C. Hubbard, of Anderson in caring for the graves of six federal soldiers buried in the cem etery of the First Prebyterian church. The resolutions are engrossed on parchment and are signed by the sec retary of state and the chairman of the committee on military of the Maine general assembly. They were :orwarded to Miss Hubbard by the governor of the state. It is probable that a company will, be formally organized during the spring for the development of the fine water power at Cherokee shoals on Savannah river. The preliminary ar rangements have been made, and it is not thought that there will be any great difficulty in "carrying the plans of the promoters through. Cherokee shoals are situated about three miles from Calhoun Falls on the Seaboard railway, and form but one of the many undeveloped water powers along the whole course of Savannah river almost down to Augusta. GOVERNOR FOR ONE DAY. Within Twenty-four Hours State of .Colorado Had Three Gov ermorm. The bargain made by leaders of the opposing republican factions of Colo rado to take the governor's chair from Alva Adams and to seat in it Lieut. Gov. Jesse F. McDonald, after permitting James H. Peabody to hold it for one day, was carried to a con clusion late Friday afternoon. In fulfillment of the agreement which he made before the general as sembly decided the gubernatorial rontest in his favor, Gov. James H. Peabody resigned the office in which he was inaugurated late Thursday af ternoon. His resignation, of which W. S. Boynton of Ct orado Springs had been custodian since Wednesday, when it was written. was filed in the office of secretary of state at 4.20 p. m. Friday. James Cowie, secretary of state, immediately certified Gov. Peabody's resignation and Lieut. Gov. McDonald was then sworn in as gov ernor by Chief Justice Gabert. There was no further ceremony. Gov. Adams was ousted and Gov. Peabody installed by the general assembly about 5 o'clock Thursday afternoon and Gov. McDonald was sworn in be fore 5 o'clock Friday afternoon. Thus, in a space of less than 24 hours, Colo rado had three governors. Gov. Peabody transacted practical ly no business of state while in the office of governor. He received many callers who urged him not to resign and also many messages of the same imnort by telegraph and telephone. To all these he replied that he did not care to hold the chair. Half a doz en members of the national guard patrolled the corridors about the exe cut've chamber during the day as a guard for Gov. Peabody. While the orchestra plays between the acts men go out and smile, but the ladies must simply grin and bear it. A man who is making a night of it never thinks of the morning after.
