IN A PAINFUL SITUATION. D uished Traveler Victim of Mistake of Bell Boy. The train on which the distin guished citizen was traveling for the purpose of fulfilling a lecture en gagement was late and he arrived at his destination only an hour or two before the time appointed for the meeting. He went straight to a hotel and was shown to his room. He was tired and dusty. "Boy," he said. "bring we a whisk." The boy went to execute the mis sion, and a few moments later a corn mi-Etee from the local society under whose auspices he was to appear call ed upon him in his room. He was conferring with the com mittee when the boy returned, bear ing a tray containing a glass of water and a smaller glass with red liquid in it. "What's that?" he demanded. "It's 'Ehe whiskey you ordered, sir." "I didn't order any whiskey," he gasped. "I ordered a whisk broom!" But -every member of the committee representing the Turkeville Total Abstinence Society will believe to his dying day that the distinguished lec 'urer got exactly what he had order ed on that occasion. A CHANCE FOR GENIUS. Invent Safe Place for Women's Money and Make Mil lions. Philadelphia Telegraph. "Ivent some place to carry mon ey," said a girl to her friend in the Hotel Walton the other day, "and we'll make a fortune. There should be genuis enough in this town for such an emergency, and the firsc to put the idea to practical use will be blessed as well as profited. I am weary of reading this impracticable suggestions about pocketed stock ings and 'pretty lit7de fawnskin rolls that can be tucked into the back hair Where did you ever see one, I'd like to know? Tbe pocket in the stock ing is a delusion and a snare. You can't get at your money in a crowd, and if you could you wouldn't. To make a depository of your back hair is absurd for many reasons which the woman with a scant growth will apreciate. You can't carry your change in a bag under your corsage and you don't dare go on the street with it in a handbag, because you are so conscious it is there you invite a grab by your very nervousness. Dress pockets with the tight-fitting gnwns of today are out of the ques tion. Can't you get Eidson or some body equally clever to suggest a scheme? Then we could put it for b. ward as our own and make millions." APE-LIKE GIANTS OF AFRICA. Strange Race Met on Southern Shore of Great Lake. Mr. Edward Grogan-who travers ed Africa along its whole length, from the Cape to Cario-met with a strange race on the southern shores of Albert Edward Nyanza. These fearsome, ape-like creatures, hiding behind banana palms, are tall men, with long arms and pendant paunch es. Such is the stamp of the brute on them that they may be placed lower in the scale than any other African native hith^'erto seen. Their face, body and limbs are covered with wiry hair, while the hang of the long, powerful arms, the slight stoop of the trunk, and the hunted, vacant ex pression of the face make them ap pear more like apes than human be ings. Northwards near Lado, the same party came across the Dinkas, a race of giants, standing six feet six inches to seven feet in height, and magnini cently developed; and in the adjoin ing Toroland which swarmed with elephants of gigantic size. the natives were simply stark-naked savages of inexp)ressible degradation of charac ter. Of course it sounds a lot better to resign a position than to get fired from a job, but a man who has had some experience claims that the ef fect on one's capacity for paying board bills is about the same. The Folly of Betting. Lord Brampton. better known as Sir Henry Hawkins. the great Eng lish criminal lawyer. judge and sportsman. has just published his reminiscences. Speaking of what cured him of betting he relates that Harry Hill. one of the "characters" of Tattersails. gavc him this piece of a(lvice as a youth: "-Ar. Hawkins. I see you come here pretty regularly on Supnday af ternoons. but I advise vou not to cal culate among us. for if you do we shall beat you. We know our bu;i ness better than you do, and von'!! get nothing out of us, any more than we should get out of you if we were able to dabble in your law, for you know that business better than we do." Who Wrote Mother Goose? Many people are under the impres Sion that "Mother Goose's" stories and nursery rhymes were written by sonie old housewife. This is a mis take. The real author was a scholar of learning and renown, Charles Per rault, one of the first members of the French academy. He died in 1703, and though it is over two hundred years ago, his tales still live. May the faries ever protect his name. Alice-Herbert says he is a self made man. Kitty-How he must suffer from remorse. He who has no vision of eternity will never get a true hold of time. Carlyle. LINCENSE NOTICE.
