CAPE HATTERAS. Most Dangerous Spot on the Atlantic -Scene of Many Wrecks. Baltimore American. The wreck of the steamship North eastern off Cape Hatteras add an other to the long list of ships that have lost their bones on the treacher eus Diamond Shoals, he graveyard of the Atlantic ocean. No place touched by the waters of the Atlantic ocean is the scene of so many disasters as Cape Hatteras. Ask a mariner for the name or number of ships that have given up their ca reers on the treacherous projection of sht North Carolina coast, and he will shrug his shoulders. The deep-sea sailors loses recollection of the con stant mishaps off Hatteras. Disas -vers are too frequent to stand out clearly in the memory. The greatest loss of lift occurred when a French steamer, trading be tween New York and the West In dies, struck a derelict vessel at night during a gale and went down with nearly 200 souls aboard. The British and Norwegian tramp steamers that have missed their way in rounding the promontory may be counted by the score. The Balimore bark Pris cilla went to pieces near Hatteras, when Captain Springsteen lost his wife, a son and a passenger. Cape Hatteras is the eastermost projection of the Atlantic coast into he sea. Shoals of shifing sands run chored the Diamond Shoalsc light ship, which has several time been swept away from her moorings and once driven ashort. If there is a gale from almost anp direction it yicks up big seas on the shoals that sprawl out to sea. The Gulf Stream, which sweeps around the projecti6n of land, adds to the confusion of the seas. It is a region of fogs, and there are land marks on the coast which somewhat restmble Cape Henry, often ltring ships in on the beach when their skippers believe they are heading for the Chesapeake. No lighthouse has ever stood the fury of the seas off Hatteras. Be tween 1875 and i9o2 the records of the life-saving service -show that there were 97 wreccs at this point, with to tal losses of $3,ooo,ooo and 62 lives. The latest attempt to build a light house at this important point was in i889, when a conract was given to .Anderson & Barr, of Pittsburg. An' ernormous caisson was constructed, :and preparations were made for put ing it in place and filling in the ma sonary and concrete in the shortest possible time. In a period of calm this, but a sudden storm carried the work away. As in the famous case of the Mni ot's Ledge and dEystone lights, it has been seriously doubted if a permanent dangerous spots off Cape Hatteras. Ever since the twenties, however, a lightship has been maintained there. This lightship, though held in place by mushroom ancors weighing 5,ooo pounds, as repeatedly been driven away from her moorings in storms. On one occasion in 19oo the lightship dragged two miles from her proper station. As the light is located only +O*O@*S*+*+4 We desire toth and prosperous la is deeply apprecu for our own.
