December 25.-John Gary Watts. former adjutant gener al of the state. died at the Columbia lospital this morning. The news of his death was unexpected and occa sioned a shock in the community, where he has lived for nearly four teen years. For a week or more Col. Watts has been quite indisposed, suf fering from asthma or a light attack of pneumonia. On Thursday of this week he went out of his room and was greeted by his friends on the streets. Then he went to his room and was quite sick. Dr. McIntosh attended Col. Watts and on Friday evening Dr. Lester, who n%as Col. Watts' regular physi cian. was called in. Dr. Lester soon discovered that Col. Watts was a very ill man and gave him constant attention. It was found that Col. Watts could get better attention at the Columbia Hospital than in his pri vate room, and yesterday afternoon he was taken to the hospital and in twelve hours was dead. Dr. Lester thinks that the imme diate cause of death was bronchial asthma and he doubts if there were any other causes, such as organic heart tr,uble, because he made a careful examination before Cpl. Watts was taken to the hospital. John Gary Watts was born at Gary's Lane. Newberry county, on September 14. 1869. His father. Cant. John W. Vat:s. was a gallant sr ier and ofcer in the 3d South Carolina rolunteers. Kershaw's brigade and served with distinction through the whole war from Gettysburg to Chick amauga. and from Manassas to John son's surrender. He was much be loved by his friends and comrades. He was exceedingly popular and was at one time the sheriff of Laurens county. His mother was Miss Jose phine Gary, the accomplished daugh ter of Dr. John K. Gary, deceased, of Newberry county. Col. Watts received his primary education at the Laurens Male acad emy and at the age of 17 entered the Citadel of South Carolina Military academy, where he remained until he graduated in 1890. He had al ready become a member of the militia while a cadet at the Citadel. In 189o he was appointed assistant adjutant general under General Far ley, the latter having been a member of his father's company in the war be tween the states, and held that posi tion during Gen. Farley's administra tion. In 1894 he was elected adjutant general of the state and was re-elect ed for a subsequent term of two years. He served four years in thd office of adjutant general and made a very good officer. After he retired from public life he went into the life insurance business, and he has been doing very well in that work and had worked up a good business. The body, accompanied by rela tives, will be taken to Laurens tomor row for interment. Rev. J. L. Williamson, pastor of the Aveleigh Presbyterian church, was remembered in a very substantial way on Christmas eve, at which time he was given an exceedingly gratifying and liberal "pounding." Never threaten to kiss a pretty girl; get busy. his daughter, Mrs. L. C. Merchant. Miss Belle Hunter is visiting at the' old home. As the oPd year dies let us forget the things that are behind and press forward to the things that are before ever striving to do more for the cause of humanity as the days go by. Goodbye rena.
