Chadwick is the disclosure that she had in her possession directly and indirectly al leged securities to the amount of near ly $14,000,000. These all bear the name of Andrew Carnegie. During the course of an address at the annual banquet of the Mississip pi society of St. Louis, held in St. Louis on Saturday night, H-on. Mal colm Franklin, of Columbus, Miss.. made an address expressive of good will toward,President Roosevelt, say ing, "I know I voice the sentiment of Mississippi when I say we are grate ful to President Roosevelt for his kindly words of the exhibit we made at your great fair." Coming after the boorish words of Governor Vard aman, of Mississippi.' in regard to what the president had to say of the MississAppi exhibit at St. Louis the words of Mr. Franklin, at a banquet attended by several hundred native Mississippians, are significant. The Bethlehem Steel corporation has been chartered at Trenton, N. J., with an authorized capital of $30, 000,000. The corporation will suc ceed the United States Shipbuilding company, now in the hands of a re ceiver. The six day bicycle race in Madison Square Garden. New York, came vu an end on Saturday night. only seven teams of the eighteen starters in at the finish. Root and Dorlon won by ten lengths. It is announced that early next spring President Hadley, of Yale, will take a trip through the south to meet the Yale alumni associations of Sa vannah, New Orleans. and other cities. Some doubt seems to exist as to whether Governor Vardaman, of Mis sissippi. will be invited to the inaugu raton of President Roosevelt. The doubt seems to have arisen op ac count of the insulting reply sent by Governor Vardaman to the telegram of President Francis, of the St. Louis exposition, regarding President Roose velt's approval of the Mississippi building and a subsequent letter in which the governor again villified the president. If assured of a courteous reply, it is stated, an invitation will be sent the governor of Mississippi, but if it can not be sure of this the committee is at present not disposed to send him an invtiationl. A destructive fire occurred in Ports mouth, Va., at an early hour on Sun day morning, starting in the lumber yard of Robinson & Co. A nuniber of buildings were destroyed, great loss being sustained. Lulu McLaughlin, who disappeared mysteriously from her home in New ark, N. J., on June 15, 1903, has been brought to that city and restored to her mother by a de,tective, who says that he found her in the Catskill mountains. The girl, who is 14 years old, tells a story of having been kid napped by a woman, taken to Manor kill, in the - Catskills, and compelled to do all kinds of drudgery on a farm there. A snow; storm, accompanied by high wind, descended upon New York city on Saturday. Nearly two inches of snow fell In a speech before the Political League for Education, in New York. Adrew D. White. formerly United Sta:es ambassador to Germany. thus censured President Roosevelt. for his action in securing the commutation of a negro's.sentence: "Much as f ad mire President Roosevelt as a true man, wve -have seen today the sorry example of the mistake a strong man can made. .The president was ap pealed to by a colored Baptis: min ister to save' the latter's son from the gallows fer the murder of a farmer in Canada. The president listened to the appeal and has succeeded in se curing a .commutation of sentence. I don't admire the president for tha:-" The Washington correspondent of the News and Courier states that there is a possibility that the agitation over the race problem in the south may become so acu.te as to cause the president t. .abandon his proposed tour of the so.uth next spring, and tha: the president is "feeling his way" in the matter. The bill. it is said. will die at the end of the session. Mortimer Brooks, of N ew \ ork city, while hunting near Pittsboro, in Chatham county, N. C., on Friday, was accidentally and it is believed fatally wounded by the discharge of both barrels of his gun. He, was crossing a ditch when the gun struck some obstruction and went off. Mr. Brooks is a millionaire, who has been visiting North Carolina for a number of vears on hun:ing expeditions. Lumbermen from all parts of the United States were in session in Savannah on Friday considering the matter of the readjustment of south ern pine specifications. There has been no readjustment of southern pine specifications for a quarter of a cen turv. The matter was referred to a committee with instructions to make tip a new schedule. It developed that when mysterious lv killed in Dallas, Texas. on Monday night of last week, Charles Goldstein had in his possession deeds to mining properties in Alaska valued at about $i;o.ooo. The deeds are missing. The murder has caused great excite ment in Dallas coming, as it did, so soon after a number of similar crimes, and the police force of Dallas is to be increased, it is said, by 2o men in order that the city may be more thoroughly patrolled. It is reported from Washington tha: the postoffice department has given postmasters everywhere to un derstand that the president will be rigid in the enforcement of his policy aainst active participation in parti san politics by federal officeholders. The body of John Remley. who was missed from a Southern railway train two weeks ago, has been found lear Mableton, a few miles above At lanta. He left the side of his wife in a sleepiVg car while they were on their way to Florida from Crawford ville, ind. It is supposed he wan dered from the train in a temporary tit of insanity or during an attack of somnambulism. Station Agent Kelly. of the Mis souri, Kansas and Texas railroad, at Brookshire, Texas, who was poison ed by unknown persons. died on Thursday. Thieves broke into the tation office, stole ninety tickets, ran acked and carried away numerous erchandise, attacked the express safe unsuccessfully, cut open two mall sacks said to contain registered atter and opened many letters taken herefrom. Great preparations are being made in Columbia for the South Carolina ollege's centennial January 8, 9 and The Columbia State gives an ac ount of a number of raids by dispen sary constables upon Coltumbia blind tigers. Mldst of the whiskey cap turd, it is stated, bore a label with a photographlic likeness of Mir. W. i. Sellers, whose place of btusiness at 805 Gervais street has been so often raiedC by the constabulary. Aaron P. Prioleau, the negro re publican congressional candidate in the ist district, was placed on trial in the United States dis:rict court on :--rday on the charge 6f tampering with the mails. It was thought the trial would not be concluded until this morning. One negro was drawn on the jury. It has been decided to build an other boat for the Columbia-George town line to succeed the ill-fated Highlander, and Mr. John M. Graham of Dublin, Ga.. will do the work. In the common pleas court in Co lumbia on Saturday Mr. M. P. Trib lle was awarded a verdict of $1,500 damages against the Western Union for delay on the part of the telegraph company to deliver to Mr. Tribble a telegram annoneing the death of a sister n Laurens. Leon Kornblut and Julius Levinson, laritii county merchants. have been c''nvicted in the United States court in Ch arle.tn "f vi"lating the bank ruptcy act. There has been much C. omplaint in many sections of the violatit)n 4f the bankru-ptcy laws in the concealment of goods. and every effort was put forward )y the government to secure the conviction of the merchants for an object lesson if nothing else, it is stated. Mr. A. B. Rabon, of Camden. has obtained a verdict against the Sea board railway for $3.ooo damages. The suit was brought for Sio.ooo for al leged discourteous treatment of Mrs. Rabon by the conductor while return ing from the state fair a year ago. State Superintendent of Education 0. B. Martin has given out a s:ate ment in which 1- 2 says that the sug gestions in his annual report. includ ing the ones in regard to the colleges. are the result of his own study and in vestigation of the school systems of this and other states. He says that he made them in response to his con ception of his duty and altogether on his own responsibility. Eugene Stancill. son of C. W. Stan cill, of Sumter, shot himself twice with a pistol in front of a bowling alley in Sumter on Thursday night. S He was under the influence of whis key. It is not thought the wounds I are serious. Robert W. Terry died at an infirm- ( ary on Thursday morning as the re sult of self-inflicted wounds. He shot a himself in Sumter on .the night of C November 30 while under the in fluence of whiskey. He was a young nan popular throughout Sumter county. S Mr. T. B. Bailey. of Edgefield, a a son-in-law of the late G. D. Tillman, a et with a tragic death while out C hunting last week. Having shot a quirrel which lodged in the limb of a tree he climbed the tree and fell, triking the ground and crushing his kull. He told a companion just be fore falling that he was sick. and it is thought he was seized with apo plexy. Herbert Pitts, the 10-year-old son >f J. M. Pitts. a leading merchant of Clinton was run over by a shifting ngine, his foot and leg being injured. A police officer of Greenville was n a qtiandary as the result of the ar est by him of a riegro loitering round the depot, upon whose person * a concealed, weapon was found. It urned out that the negro had a orpse in his charge, which he was o take away on the next train, and e claimed the pistol wvas the prop rty of the dead man. It was a case f detaining the negro. and taking are of the corpse or letting the ne gro take the corpse out of town with im on the train due in a few mo ents, and the police officer decided I o let the negro go. Sam Dunlap, colored, was shot and very seriously wounded, by his boy, a: Sam Dunlap, aged 15, ~at -his homeF near Laurens, as the result of a quar- a rel between the two. Eugene Jarnegan, of Mlarion. a mem er of the legislature from that coun ty for fotur years, will become a can didate for superintendent of the state penitentiary opposing the present sup erintendent, Capt. D. J. Grinfith, in his race for re-election.
