In the last issue _f The Iierald and News our readers were given an ac count of the murder of the Hughes family at Trenton and the burning of their home over the dead bodies. The tragedy in itself was one of the most horrible which has evr- shocked South Carolina. but it ha- gr . more horrible as the people of Trenton have become convinced that the per petrator of the deed was Mr. B. B. Hughes himself, who after killing his wife and two daughters. aged iS and 15 respectively, set fire to the house and then committed suicide. There has been no proof so far that Mr. Hughes was the perpetrator of the awful crime, but all facts have seemed to support the theory. Of course, it is believed he suddenly lost his mind. He had been in the most comfortable inancial circumstances, but it has been said that he had recently lost some money, and it is believed finan cial troubles had unbalanced his mind for the time being. Mr. Hughes was one of the most respected business men of Trenton and his family life was, to all appear an the most happy. Taken alto g r the tragedy is one of the dark est that has ever shocked this state. The South Carolina Conference of the Methodist Episcopal church, South, will meet in annual session in Darlington tomorrow. The confer ence is composed of strong and earn est men and Darlington is fortunate in having secured the session this year. The Newberry Telegram, Newber ry's first daily paper, which has been published since May. announced yes terday afternoon that it had ceased publication. The Charleston newspapers seem to have taken very seriously the propo sition to remove the Citadel to Co lumbia and unite it with the South Carolina college. forx1::ng a South Carolina university. Without going into a discussion of the merits of the proposition. there seems to be little chance that the Citadel will be re-: moved from Charleston for a long time yet. The Chadwick sensation continues to occupy thle most prominent place in the daily newspapers. President Roosevelt seems to be in~ no hurry to bring about a revision of the tariff laws. The Spartanburg Journal says "the best and most comforting and enjoy able -things in the world are free sunshine, fresh air, love, friendship, religion." Jt is a great truth, but the best part of it is that never can a monopoly of any of theni be secured. CHRISTMAS RATES. Holiday Rates via Southern Rail way.
